Different results when I Install vs when I Import a Web Server (template version 2) Certificate.
The problem is that IIS Manager on a Windows 2008 Server does not see a certificate that was simply installed (Scenario 1), where as it does see a certificate that has been imported (Scenario 2). For both scenarios the initial certificate request came from a Windows Server 2008 in our active directory, Certificates MMC using the Advanced Operations \ Create custom request ServerName.req file for a Web Server template duplicated to be a version 2. Scenario 1 Double click on the ServerName.cer certificate file and click the Install Certificate... button, this launches the Certificate Import Wizard, click Next, Place all certificates in the following store, Browse... to Personal, Next, and Finish. Then luanch the Certificates (Local Computer) MMC and drag the certificate to the Personal \ Certificates store from the User store. Result: No Certificate in IIS Manager Scenario 2 launch Certificates (Local Computer) MMC, right click then All Tasks \ Import... this too launches the Certificate Import Wizard, you Browse... to the ServerName.cer file and Place all certificates in the following store \ Personal, Next and Finish Result: Certificate now visible in IIS Manager

Scenario 1 installs the certificate and the public key only. Scenario 2 adds the certificate, the public key, and the private key. You need all 3 in order to use the certificate for SSL.Paul Adare CTO IdentIT Inc. ILM MVP
