Hi, Windows 2008 is based on the same kernal as windows vista and windows 2008 R2 is based on the same kernal as Windows 7. So it's a complete different version.

Server equivelant to Vista Sp1
Is offered in X86 and X64 editions
Hyper-V only available in 64-bit version
Windows Server 2008 R2
Codename: Blackcomb, renamed to Vienna, renamed to 7
Windows NT 6.1.7600 version of Windows Server
Only offered as a X64 network operating system
Server equivelant Windows 7
New "stuff" = DirectAccess; Homegroup; Hyper-V, BranchCache (** Hyper-V is not new, but you cannot receive a version of R2 without it, it was optional for Longhorn**)
Has 1644 Computer Group Policy settings
Has 1453 User Group Policy Settings
