Desktop Not displaying when offline from network.

My Remote User Laptops are displaying the desktop icons when they are connected to our network. When the machines go out in the field (and can't connect to our network), the desktop icons do not appear and instead I get the following error:

"Windows cannot access \\myserver\users\myuser\desktop

Error code 0x80070035 "

Obviously the error code is fixed once it's connected in to the network again or use cisco vpn to reconnect (and the icons return), but I need to maintain access to these desktop icons, even without a network connection.

I have already tried copy/pasting the icons from the network icons folder in to the public desktop folder on the local machine. That gets the same result, Any other ideas? I'm using Windows 7.

Ive tried using offline files setup via group policy with no success, im having problems adding the path to make the files available offline (the path is \\domain\profiles$) and i think the $ is preventing the option for "always available offline" from showing when i right click on a subfolder (the users data path for redirected files)

Ive read alot of solutions on the internet and am still coming up empty.

Thanks!
