Dcpromo with Windows 2000
Hi Guy,
I having this problem with dcpromo my Windows 2008 R2 with Windows 2000.
Details:
Windows 2000 - 1st DC.
Windows 2003 - Memeber DC.
Windows 2008 R2 - Fail to join as DC.
I have adprep with the Windows 2008 R2 disk on the Windwos 2000 Dc, complete without error. Then i join the Windows 2003 as the Member Dc with Windows 2000.
But when i try to join Windows 2008 R2 as member DC to the Domain, its fail. Telling me to prep the DC using the Windows 2008 disk.
Question:
Can Windows 2008 R2 join as Member DC with Windows 2000. Or should i transfer all roles to Windows 2003 1st then join Winodws 2008???
Thanks

Hello,
did you make sure to use the adprep32.exe from the Windows server 2008 R2 disk and NOT the adprep.exe, as this is ONLY for 64bit?

Hi,
Windows Server 2008 R2 includes a 32-bit version and a 64-bit version of Adprep.exe. The 64-bit version runs by default. If you want to
run one of the Adprep.exe commands on a 32-bit computer, use the 32-bit version of Adprep.exe (Adprep32.exe). For more information, please refer to the following Microsoft

Hello,
for upgrade to AD DS 2008 R2: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc731188(WS.10).aspx
If you are using the 2008 R2 install media on a 32 bit OS, run adprep32.
If you are using the 2008 R2 install media on a 64 bit OS, run adprep.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply.
Will try that out.
My question now is, i had run the adprep.exe from the R2 disk, which is the 64bits version, can i still run the 32bit .exe??
Will the 32bit .exe overwrite or prep the AD again.
That mean to say, after running the adprep32.exe, i should be able to join the win2008 R2 as a DC in the Domain, correct....
ThanksSimon Hoo

Hi,
Since you ran Adprep X64 on Windows Server 2000 Domain Controller, the result should be failed. The Schema has not been extended successfully and there
is no file will be overwritten.
