Database speed slow over the network
Hi all I have a Workgroup with 14 client PCs and a server 2003 as a file server. They all are in the same workgroup. We have a proprietary progamme that has a database folder stored on a server and individual client PC has the application installed that use the central database folder on ther server. The program runs fast enough locally on the server but slowly on the network. I have already tried disabling the antivirus software. Windows firewall disabled as Routing and Remote Access is active. Disabled firewall on the client PCs. No third party firewall installed.NIC speed is set to AUTO. Client computers use the mapped drive to access the central folder on the server. The program runs well if I can ignore the slow speed. But given the circumstances and if possible I would really appreciate your help to make it run faster. Thank you.

Hi, How did you identify the slow speed? Have you tried to copy files from the server through shared folder, what’s the speed? By the way, when the speed is slow, how many clients access the database? Best Regards, Vincent Hu

Thanks for the reply. I did copy the folder from a server to a local PC and it seems quite slow. The speed is around 15Mbps. For that reason, my application is running slow which has the databse folder on the server. Normally fifteen access it, but to test it, I did with just One user at night. RAM used on server is less than 300MB with 2GB in total. Thank you

OK I have got the details for you Sainath. I have got the details of my server and two other client computers. Rest of the computers are of the simialr specs. Server: Server 2003 R2 SP2 a) mrxsmb.sys: 5.2.3790.3959 b) srv.sys (3 instances of this file): 5.2.3790.4363;5.2.3790.433;5.2.3790.473 c) rdbss.sys: 5.2.3790.3959 d) netbt.sys: 5.2.3790.3959 Client PC 1 XP SP2 a) mrxsmb.sys: (9 instances of this file, three are here) 5.1.2600.2598;5.1.2600.2902;5.1.2600.5512 b) srv.sys: (3 instances of this file) 5.1.2600.2974;5.1.2600;5512;5.1.2600.5671 c) rdbss.sys: (4 instances) 5.1.2600.2902;5.1.2600.5512;5.1.2600.5512;5.1.2600.1599 d) netbt.sys: (3 instances) 5.1.2600.2180;5.1.2600.5512;5.1.2600.5512 Client PC 2 XP SP3 a)mrxsmb.sys: (9 instances, 3 are here) 5.1.2600.2598;5.1.2600.5512;5.1.2600.2902 b) srv.sys: (3 instances) 5.1.2600.2974;5.1.2600.5512;5.1.2600.5671 c) rdbss.sys: (4 instances) 5.1.2600.2902;5.1.2600.5512;5.1.2600.5512;5.1.2600.1599 D) netbt.sys: (3 instances) 5.1.2600.2180;5.1.2600.5512;5.1.2600.5512 Thank you for your help. Hi, Thanks for the info, how are you copying the files ? are you copying files to the central folder using application ? can you try a simple test share a folder on any drive on central server From one of the client ( where u experience delay ) , try copying 500 MB , 1.GB file through the below mechanism a) \\<fqdn>\sharedfolder ( check the speed and time b) \\ipaddress\sharedfolder ( same above ) c) from cmd prompt map a drive to server , use xcopy and check the time

Thank you Sainath for your interest. Here are the details for copying files from local PC to server: PC 1 :::1.19GB file::fqdn-8 mins; IP-6:35 (mins:secs);Mapped drive-7:35 mins PC 2 :::1.19GB file::fqdn-8 mins; IP-6:45 mins; Mapped drive-7:35 mins PC 1 :::430 MB:: fqdn-1:10 mins; IP-1.15 mins; mapped drive-1:12 mins PC 2 :::430MB:: fqdn-1:24 mins; IP-1:15 mins; mapped drive-53 secs Well I started testing with copying files in the network because my program was running slow on the network. The scenario is all the client PCs have particular application that has to access that central data that resides on the server. Thanks again.

Hi , I would say 1.xGB of file takes 8 min should be okay ( not good ) , but acceptable. can you make sure you perform the same tests using safe mode and post me the results. The reason is that safe mode with networking will not involve any 3rd party application intervension. Also make sure you have updated NIC drivers to latest versions. Second try different modes of duplex ( 100 mbps full duplex ) should be ideal.

I will definitely perform those test in safe mode tomorrow when I get back to the office. But just out of curiousity, how did you go with those systems (.sys) files's file version? Just wanted to learn, what those specific .sys files' file versions play in the network performnace. Anyway you dont have to answer this question if you dont want to. I will post those safe mode results tomorrow. Thanks again Regards

the answer is very simple most of the protocol implement is done at the kernel level and might has the corresponding user level application interacting with kernel mode driver. with respect to file system, explorer which uses shell32.dll interacts with the file system driver. so you have to identify which is this driver. If you look at the topology request ( from win32 ) --> network ( because u access network drive or share ) --> go out of adapter. but to implement this they developed a redirector with help of those above files. if u need more do let me know

Hi Sainath I checked the speed in safe mode. The results are not much difference; give or take few seconds when compared to the normal mode. Any synopsis by now? Also the way application gets transmitted over the network seems interesting to me. I am getting out of luck with my network. Please do let me know of your thoughts. Regards
