Database counters giving specified instance not present error

I am trying to collect performance counter data on a SQL 2008 server running Win 2008 R2. It runs fine on my Win 8 machine with a local SQL instance but the same PS script fails on the server (both run as administrator).  PowerShell on the server is version 3.

This is the command    Get-Counter -Counter "\Database(*)\Log Bytes Write/sec"

This is shown in the list when I do a (Get-Counter -ListSet Database).Paths    and I use the same exact s

The counters are not active.  You may have an issue with the installation.  Contact MS Support for help.

First run this to be sure your counter iss active:

Get-Counter -ListSet Database|select -ExpandProperty PathsWithInstances
