DNS updates and a ghost nic
Have a 2003 server that has been giving me some issues. When i reboot the computer, actually a vm, it sits on Applying Computer Settings for an extended period of time, then finally reboots. I believe the problem started when the VM's nic was changed(not
sure how yet). Anyways, if I do a ipconfig /registerdns from the command line I always get 11186/90/92/94 errors but with the ghost nic's ID(which points to old DNS servers that don't exist any more). I have removed the ghost nic using set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
trick, but still get the same messages. If I remove the current NIC from the VM it reboots just fine. Been digging around and netsh winsock reset may be a command to try. Just was wondering if anyone else had any other ideas. Was thinking of running it through
the vm converter, but the VM was never a real box to begin with.

Hi Joey,
Thanks for posting here.
Which VM software are you using now ?
So you have already verified and deleted the removed NIC by using MMC snap-in ?

I’d suggest you to check the registry and make sure there are no remained information exist:

Tiger, thank for the reply. Using VMWare for virtualization. I'll give each of those links a try and give an update.

Hi Joey,
I still suspect that we are not totally remove old NIC information form VM, could you try remove all exist virtual NICs form this VM with following the workaround
below again?
Uninstall all NICs from device manager.
1. Click Start , click Run , type cmd.exe , and then press ENTER.
2. Type set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 , and then press ENTER.
3. Type Start DEVMGMT.MSC , and then press ENTER.
4. Click View , and then click Show Hidden Devices .
5. Expand the Network Adapters tree.
6. Right-click all network adapters, and then click Uninstall .
Then shut down the machine & add NICs as required. On starting the machine, it should auto-detect the NICs and install them. After this all traffic routing
should be fine.
Thanks.
Tiger Li

That didn't help much either. Well its either reinstall the OS or rebuild the machine from scratch. Probably going to just rebuild the machine from scratch. Thanks for the suggestions Tiger.
