DNS resolution for Domain Names, where does it come from in DNS Zone information

Hi folks,

I have a dilemma I'm struggling with and need to initially ask one question.

Regarding NSLOOKUP testing:

If I open NSLOOKUP and simply ask for a query on a specific domain name. Where is that information read from in DNS?

Example

c:\NSLOOKUP

Default Server : dnsservername.contoso.com

Address: 10.245.12.7

>contoso.com

Name: contoso.com

Addresses: 10.245.12.7, 10.245.12.8, 10.245.12.9

So where is the comma separated list of servers being actually read from and returned by DNS.

Which specific Resource locator records are required for this ?

Hi  Rab1967 ,

The first question :

The IP addresses are from host records .The name of the record is the domain name(In the zone ,the name is displayed as same as parent folder .) .

The second question :

When we type characters in nslookup ,it will query for host records by default .To see the settings of nslookup ,type set all .

For detailed process of the query ,we can use debug mode of nslookup .

To enter debug mode ,type nslookup and then type set d2 .

Here is the guide for using nslookup :

Nslookup :

Leo, thanks for your response, that was still very helpful.

I eventually twigged on my real issue though and why my DC's were not registering correctly in DNS. The client was utilising the NetLOGON/Parameters registry setting of DNSAvoidRegisterRecords to stop their remote Site domain controllers from registering in DNS and being found by users accross the WAN.

This setting was stopping my test servers from registering correctly in DNS and therefore not showing in the available list of DC's for the domains.

Thank you for your reply!
