DNS question
Unable to ping host name of mac client from server but can ping it's IP address. I can however ping the same mac client via hostname from my machine which is on the same network as the mac client. The server which I cannot ping the mac client via host
name is on a different subnet which Im not sure if it matters or not. I also checked the DNS server and there is no Address record for the mac client which I dont know if it also matters or not. I checked the dhcp server and it its getting an IP from the dhcp
server...Any ideas?

Hello,
please add manually an A DNS record for your MAC and make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on the client computer. Once done, check again.\
Also, check that there is no firewall that is blocking DNS traffic. Use
nslookup for check.

Hi,
On DHCP scope properties and DNS tab you can select "Always Dynamically update A & PTR records".
After this go to your mac machine and In System Preferences -> Network press "Renew DHCP Lease".
Then try to ping with hostname and check

I am able to ping the mac via host name and IP since we are on the same network. Any ideas why from the server which is on a different network I am unable to ping the same mac client via host name but can ping it by IP?

You can ping the Mac client by IP because from server on another subnet because:
The IP traffic is routable from the pinging machine to the destination machine.
You cannot ping the Mac client by name from server on another subnet because:
Even though traffic from server to client is routable, there is no name resolution server and NetBIOS over TCP/IP is restricted to the local subnet.
You can ping the Mac client by name from your machine because:
NetBIOS over TCP/IP which works on IP subnet and media access control (MAC) level broadcasts by a host for name registration and announcement on the local subnet.
Hope it helps!

Is there a setting on the mac that needs to be set? I can ping a windows client via host name from the same server which I cannot ping the mac.....Also, the "Always Dynamically update A & PTR records" is already enabled.

Hi madbeast,
Is there a setting on the mac that needs to be set?
NetBios resolves computer name in same subnet. If you want to resolve computer name across subnet, you need to set up Wins or DNS server for these subnet. So like Mr X mentioned, add an A DNS record point to Mac computer on your DNS server.
If there are more inquiries on this issue, please feel free to let us know.Regards,
