DNS or IIS question
Hi,
Running server 2008 SP2 on 2 different servers, one as a DC and the other as webserver. We called our domain company.com. Now, our website is called www.company.com. All is fine. Except some employees are just typing company.com in their web browsers which comes up with you are not authorized error. Is there any way of making company.com go to the proper web page? What I am worried about is messing up the active directory settings.

Hi,
I am afraid that we cannot do that because DC will register an A record for the domain name company.com. If we change the A record and make company.com go to the web server, some application may not be able to locate the domain controller in the domain.

Hello Toolbox,I see that you marked Joson's post as the accepted answer, but i wanted to let you know that my organization encountered this same problem. When we upgraded to Active Directory 2003 from NT 4.0, this became a problem with us. MICROSOFT'S solution which was provided by MCS staff was to prevent the DCs from registering the A record for the domain name. We have had this configuration for the past 6 years and never had a problem with any apps or clients locating domain resources including DFS. Therefore, you may want to check this link out for more information:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc784031(WS.10).aspxNOTE: if you do implement this registry edit on each domain controller, you will need to manually create a static entry in DNS for your Global Catalog records, which is located in the subdomain: gc._msdcs. Simply create a parent record (A) record for each GC.I think this is something that may be useful for you, but of course, continue your research before you decide to go with this solution.Visit my blog: anITKB.com, an IT Knowledge Base.
