DNS error when trying to to add AC DC 2008 to a 2000 domain.
Installed a new Windows Server 2008, joined the domain. Logged in as a domain administrator. When I use dcpromo.exe wizard to add a domain controller to an existing domain, the Network Credentials step does not let me through with DNS error: The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate an Active Directory Domain Controller for domain [[ domain name removed]]: The error was: "DNS name does not exist."(error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR) The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.[[ domain name removed]] Common causes of this error include the following: - The DNS SRV records required to locate a AD DC for the domain are not registered in DNS. These records are registered with a DNS server automatically when a AD DC is added to a domain. They are updated by the AD DC at set intervals. This computer is configured to use DNS servers with the following IP addresses: [[ addresses removed ]][[addresses removed ]][[addresses removed ]][[addresses removed ]] - One or more of the following zones do not include delegation to its child zone: [[ domain name removed]]. (the root zone)For information about correcting this problem, click Help. P.S.Windows Server 2000 DC has been successfully prepared according to the article:http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/library/708da9f7-aaad-4fa1-bccb-76ea8569da501033.mspx?mfr=true

1) Verify that a network connection on the server on which you are installing Active Directory is configured with a DNS server to query for domain names.2)If you are installing Active Directory on a server in an existing forest, then the network connection of the server must be configured with one or more DNS servers. If not, then configure the network connection with the IP addresses of one or more DNS servers. If you are installing Active Directory to create a new forest, and no DNS servers are available on the network, then the Active Directory Installation Wizard can automatically install and configure a local DNS server. The DNS server will be installed on the server where you are running the wizard and the server's preferred DNS server setting will be configured to use the new local DNS server. If you install a local DNS server using the Active Directory Installation Wizard, you may stop using this checklist.3)Verify DNS resource records. If you are installing Active Directory on a server in an existing forest, verify that the appropriate service (SRV) resource records and the corresponding address (A) resource records exist in DNS.Role SRV resource recordAdditional domain controller in an existing domain _ldap._tcp.dc._mcdcs.ActiveDirectoryDomainDNSNameFirst domain controller in a new child domain _ldap._tcp.dc._mcdcs.ParentActiveDirectoryDomainDNSNameFirst domain controller in a new tree _ldap._tcp.dc._mcdcs.ForestRootDomainDNSNameIf the required SRV and A resource records do not exist in DNS, you can add these records. If you have configured DNS to not dynamically register these resource records in DNS, then these resource records must be added manually. The list of resource records that should be registered by a domain controller are stored in the following location:systemroot\System32\Config\Netlogon.dnsyou can also follow the linkhttp://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/en/library/5ad19264-4a25-4698-8dc2-e23f47ae7d041033.mspx?mfr=trueHope this HelpsSyed Khairuddin
