DNS client iterative query
I mistakenly posted a message on this board ( http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itpronetworking/thread/4bb9982b-d03a-4995-af44-f08c7f210a78/ ) and was directed to this forum. Any help is greatly appreciated. So I have a question about a DNS server with recursion turned off and DNS clients. So according to this site: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc775637%28WS.10%29.aspx the DNS Server can respond with a referral answer. Now my question is how does a Windows Server 2008 R2 DNS client handle these referral answers? Does it take the RRs and attempt to query them? If so is there a way to control how/when it attempts to use the referral answer? Is it always off? What is the default? Thank you for any help.

Hi Customer, Now my question is how does a Windows Server 2008 R2 DNS client handle these referral answers? Does it take the RRs and attempt to query them? Yes, windows 2008 DNS client handle referral answer same as windows 2003 DNS client. If so is there a way to control how/when it attempts to use the referral answer? Is it always off? What is the default? DNS iteration query use referral answer in two conditions, · The client requests the use of recursion, but recursion is disabled on the DNS server. (control on DNS server) · The client does not request the use of recursion when querying the DNS server. (control on client application) By default, DNS server and client use recursive query with no referral answer.
