DNS Address registration crashing svchost
I noticed a strange problem on windows vista and windows server 2008 computers in my domain. When the option to register a connections address in DNS is selected there is randomly a popup that a generic host process crashed. Also when looking at my network and sharing center, it tells me that I have limited connectivity, although I can connect to the internet and ping other hosts on my network. When I click on the red x and it asks if I want windows to resolve the problem for me, it comes back saying that no problem was found. I can solve this problem by disabling the registering of a connections address in DNS and reboot and these problems go away completely and my network and sharing center report that I am connected to the internet with no problems. Does anyone know what would cause this kind of behavior? Is there something I need to change with my DNS server configuration. All my windows XP and Windows 2003 servers work without any problems with the DNS registration option checked. Also, even if windows were having some sort of issue registering its connection, it seems like quite a bug in windows that it causes processes to crash. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks :-)

hi there, this behavior is not normal , the dns server isunder svchost.exe hood which means, svchost as a single process will hold child processes such as dns and other services. many of the customers have earlier posted the similar issue where in svchost gets hang and cpu utilization gets spike up. pleasehave a thorough virus / trojan check on the system also make sure you update your system with latest updates and after a reboot please check if the issue still persists.Virus behavior : under hklm\system\ccs\services , there will be a service registered with wierd name Name : conficker install ms-08-067 sainath

I do not think this is a virus issue. This is on a clean install, which was updated to correct the exploit that conficker tries to take advantage of, and this system also has up to date antivirus software. I think this is a bug in the DNS client. I also entered a thread in the vista forums because I am having this issue on vista computers as well. Please check out the link to the thread below, any help you can provide would be great. http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/itprovistanetworking/thread/380916fb-764c-4696-9fa2-e57557c674ba Thanks

hi there, i would suggest you to configure drwtsn32 as your default debugger to do that please navigate to start --> run--> drwtsn32 -i and hit enterafter which try reproducing the problem when a generic host message occurs , a dump file will be automatically gets created.please go to start -->run--> drwtsn32 and you can see the dump listed , copy the dump file and send it to sainathss@live.in for analysis.sainath

Update DNSAPI.dll file on vista box. If you don't have SP1 for vista, please install SP1.ORUnistall NIC drivers and re-install NIC drivers, i have feeling that issue might be due to file is being used by multiple app at same time.

The answer to the problem was that there was a problem with the DNSClient which was fixed in the latest service pack, as soon as the service pack was installed this problem was fixed.
