DHCP server replacement
Hello, I have built a new DHCP server to replace a server that is coming out of service. I have created the scopes on the new server with ranges that do not affect the old server. These new scopes have not been activated. I was wondering how to make the switch? Do I just activate the new scopes and dcpromo the old dc? What am I missing here? Thanks

Hello, you are able to migrate DHCP servers according to: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/325473 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/962355 If that is not needed, then make sure the new scopes match the current ones, the new DHCP servers are authorized in the domain and just activate them after disabling the scopes on the old DHCP server. The clinets will work until the half lease time expires and then will update the lease, means earching the DHCP server to get in your case a new one. Because the machines mayeb try to renew an address that is already in use from another machine on the new DHCP you should make the change on a weekend or inform the users to shutdown there machines(maybe do it remote with shutdown command, keep in mind that no user data will be safed that way) or change the lease time on the old DHCP servers to only some hours so the refrsh occurs shortly.Best regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees , and confers no rights.
