DHCP Services Blocked by the Firewall
Hi all, I installed Windows Vista Server last week. This machine host the DHCP services. I realize that my clients cannot get any IP address. After investigating, I concluded that it was the vista firewall that was blocking the requests. So here is my configuration : One network interface connected to Internet (mark as public) One network interface that is connected to my intranet (I mark it as private) DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) is allowed in "Inbound rules" of the firewall I can get an IP from my DHCP only if I change the state of the public profil in "Windows Firewall with advanced security properties" with Allow for inbound connections. Any help ? Thank you

Hi Aleks- The Windows Firewall includes a number of built-in inbound and outbound exceptions for common scenarios. The built-in exception from "Core Networking" is for DHCP clients. To act as a DHCP server, you willneed to create a rule with a bit of different logic. An updated set of built-in exceptions will be included in the next major Windows Server "Longhorn" milestone. In the meantimeyou can create a rule to allow UDP 53 inbound with a local address restriction for their private interface. This is a temporary workarounduntil the real rules are included in thebuild mentioned above. Also, the next Windows server OS (i.e. replacement Windows Server 2003) will not be called "Vista Server". It is currently named Windows Server "Longhorn" and will likely follow the Windows Server 20xx naming convention when officially branded for release. Cheers, Ian

Ok, Thank you Ian for these explanations. I will make this specific rule and never more call Vista Server "Vista Server" ;)
