DHCP SCOPE

Hi All - This setup is a home lab where, I want to test and learn stuff on DHCP

One Domain Controller - Server 2012 R2 (running DNS and DHCP)

Current DHCP Scope - 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.254

Mask - 255.255.255.0

Gateway - 192.168.0.1 (this is my ISP provided Router)

What, I would like is to create the following:

Another DHCP Scope with 192.168.1.0 - 192.168.1.254

Another DHCP Scope with 192.168.2.0 - 192.168.2.254

Mask - 255.255.255.0

The Gateway for above scopes (192.168.1.x and 192.168.2.x) will be 192.168.0.1 (as, I have only one Router in the lab)

Will above configuration work within my lab after, I create a super scope and combine all the scopes (192.168.0.x, 192.168.1.x, 192.168.2.x) so that any computer in the lab network should be ip address from any of the above scopes.  Let me know.

I am new to DHCP - Hence trying to understand the concept well before venturing out with DNS and other stuff in Networking.

Thanks

Hi

You can check detailed information about dhcp super scope pn this article

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd759168.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396

And you could follow the steps on article for configure super scope

I looked at the second link - The instructor is using 2 routers as default gateway (192.168.0.1 and 192.168.1.1).  In my case, I do not have 2 routers to configure.  Just one router which is 192.168.0.1.  So the link you gave would not be helpful to setup multiple scope within my setup.  Still looking for help.

You can configure your 3 scopes using your one router (192.168.0.1).

OK this is what I have done so far.

Created DHCP Scopes 192.168.1.x and 192.168.2.x

Created Super Scope and added 192.168.0.x 192.168.1.x and 192.168.2.x

Scope Options for all 3 scopes are Router (003) 192.168.0.1, DNS Server (005) 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3, Domain Name (015) XXXXXXXXXXXX.COM

Server Options - Router (003) 192.168.0.1, DNS Server (005) 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3, Domain Name (015) XXXXXXXXXXXX.COM

Activated all the scopes.

Am I in the right path?

Hi

DNS server is your DC's ip adrress, you could configure all scopes DNS Server (005) to your DC's ip adrress.

The other config seems to be OK.

Yes, I have 2 DNS servers (DC1 and DC2).  They are 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3.  So I entered both for DNS Server (005) within Scope and Server Options.

Hi LANHD,

According to your description, you want to create DHCP scopes for subnet 192.168.1 and 192.168.2, the DHCP server is in subnet 192.168.0.

When DHCP client requests for IP configurations, it broadcasts a discovery packet to all DHCP servers in the subnet, DHCP servers in different subnets couldnt receive the packet. If we want to create a DHCP scope 192.168.1.0-192.168.1.254 to serve subnet 192.168.1, we have to configuration a DHCP relay agent that forward DHCP clients packets in subnet 192.168.1 to the DHCP server.

Superscope groups multiple scopes as a single administrative entity. When we use superscope to serve different subnets, we still needs to ensure that the router in the network have multiple IP address that can forward packets to different subnets.

Here are some reference about how DHCP works and DHCP relay agent:

How DHCP works:

DHCP relay agent:

Anne - If, I understand correctly, I need to install RRAS (to configure DHCP Relay Agent) which should have the IP Address of my DHCP Server (192.168.0.3).  Since, I have two domain controllers (192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3), two dns servers (192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3) and one dhcp server (192.168.0.3), I should install DHCP Replay Agent on the server that is not running DHCP service - right which in my case should be on domain controller 192.168.0.2?

DHCP Replay Agent is required as, I have only one Router (192.168.0.1) and my DHCP Super Scopes are 192.168.0.x, 192.168.1,x and 192.168.2.x

Thanks

RL
