DHCP Dynamic DNS updates only working after service restart?
My Windows 2003 server has been setup with Dynamic DNS Updates in DHCP for a while now. Everything had been running normally until recently I noticed some host records got deleted for servers that DHCP leases. I looked at the servers and registered them in DNS with "registerdns", which solved that problem. BUT I added a new computer to the domain it wasn't registering either. So, I restarted the DHCP service, and cleints magically started updating themselves in DNS again. This has happened a couple times now where DNS isn't getting updated and restarting DHCP seems to fix the issue. I don't see anything in the event logs. Any ideas why this could be doing this? Does it matter what the DHCP client is running OS wise? Thanks in advance.

Hi, Thank you for the post. So, I restarted the DHCP service, and clients magically started updating themselves in DNS again. You mean you restart DHCP client service on your client computer? DNS dynamic updates depend on DHCP client service. Please ensure the service start automatically. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/264539 More details about dynamic updates in Windows 2003. Hello, and thank you for your response. What I meant was this. I had a windows 7 VM that I added to the domain and restarted multiple times. That host record wasn't adding to DNS when it was given an IP address from DHCP. I restarted multiple times with the same result. THEN, I restarted the DHCP server service on the DHCP server. (which is also on the same server as my DNS server) When I rebooted the DHCP cleint then, it successfully registered the record in DNS. This setup has been running fine for awhile and no changes were recently made. I noticed that this had started when servers with IPs from the DHCP server were losing their host records when DNS scavaging occured. Thinking I just need to build a new DHCP server because this one is acting odd..

Hi, Please ensure that you have configured DNS reverse zone on your DNS server. Moreover, try to install KB919709 and KB939928. Or update your Windows 2003 server with latest patch. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919709 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/939928 RegardsRick Tan TechNet Community Support

Yes, I have a reverse zone for that network on my DNS. Guessing that it is a bug and I will try install the patches you suggested. If that doesn't work, I will just replace the server because it is a bit older anyway. Thanks!
