DHCP
Hello everybody, I have a question, that i didn't find a proper answer on the internet. Example of the situation: Suppose i have 2 servers. 1. is just iis that is running regular websites, and it has installed DHCP. 2. Is running exchange server and it has installed also DHCP Now the question. Is normal to have installed on both servers DHCP or i must have install DHCP on only one server. And if it is just to install DHCP on one server which is the one that it must remain installed? Thank you so much, any answer it will be very appreciatedwillockss

Hello, you should not use a DC for DHCP becasue of security reasons, domain member servers are ok for the role. If you use one or more depends on your needs for redundancy. See here about 80/20 rule http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc739076(v=ws.10).aspx which of course can be also changed to other values. Personal i would not use the Exchange for DHCP server role.Best regards Meinolf Weber MVP, MCP, MCTS Microsoft MVP - Directory Services My Blog: http://msmvps.com/blogs/mweber/ Disclaimer: This posting is provided AS IS with no warranties or guarantees and confers no rights.

Hello Meinolf and thank you for answering in such a short time. To understand correctly, is better to not have DHCP role installed on the exchange server, and to let just the DHCP role installed on the first server. Please let me know willockss

Hello, if you have the need for DHCP servers then you cannot remove the role. But i would not use an Exchange server for anything else then Exchange.Best regards Meinolf Weber MVP, MCP, MCTS Microsoft MVP - Directory Services My Blog: http://msmvps.com/blogs/mweber/ Disclaimer: This posting is provided AS IS with no warranties or guarantees and confers no rights.

In short, the recommended option for your scenario, would be to keep the DHCP on the IIS and remove it from the Exchange. If you need DHCP redundancy try to get another machine to run DHCP and configure a scope that doesn't overlap with the existing one. Best practices Use the 80/20 design rule for balancing scope distribution of addresses where multiple DHCP servers are deployed to service the same scope. Using more than one DHCP server on the same subnet provides increased fault tolerance for servicing DHCP clients located on it. With two DHCP servers, if one server is unavailable, the other server can take its place and continue to lease new addresses or renew existing clients. A common practice when balancing a single network and scope range of addresses between two DHCP servers is to have 80 percent of the addresses distributed by one DHCP server and the remaining 20 percent provided by a second.
