DFS Root Folder Empty after mapping

Hi ,

I have DFS Namespace created in a cluster mode across Windows server 2008 R2 in my environment.

Some users have the problem that their Shared Folder (DFS Root Folder like "\\abc-intranet.net\MyDFSroot" is Empty or Sometime it shows all the Shared folders (in thousands) within DFS root , While they can access the Shared Folders to which they have been given access by using their UNC paths without any issues.

Could anyone suggest why the Mapping of DFS root doesnot show any folders to users to which they have access? Where might be the bug?

Generally the mapping of DFS root Folder should contain all the Shared folders to which the users have access to.

Any Bright ideas or suggestions are highly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi,

When client accessing a DFS namespace and goes to access the DFS root, if no domain-based root referral exists in the referral cache, the client connects to the  active domain controller and requests a domain-based root referral.

In your case it seems like a DC fail to provide a referral list so it stopped in accessing the folder \\abc-intranet.net\MyDFSroot.

Please understand that \\abc-intranet.net\MyDFSroot is a real-existing shared folder, generally it is on PDC as \\abc-intranet.net point to IP address of PDC. So with or without successfully accessing the DFS namespace, \\domain.com\root could point to 2 different folders (1 located on namespace server inside c:\DFSroots, 1 located on PDC, if PDC is not one of namespace servers).

In order to confirm the situation, we may need to capture a network trace for analysis.
