Creating Windows 10 VM Template

I wonder if anyone has had a go and successfully created a Win 10 Template?

I had a request for one from our R&D team to start playing with and once I have my Gold image clone the "Create VM Template" option is greyed out.

I have the VM Additions installed (Albeit a much higher version than the other VMs) and is showing in VMM, of course the machine is shut down, no checkpoints, no ISOs attached and I've tried refreshing the VM, host and cluster.

If I shut down one of my other gold images the option is available so this isn't permissions (I am part of the admin group).

Am I missing something obvious?

It is not yet supported / nor lit up.

For one thing, you would most likely require an update to the ADK as well as the SCVMM 2016 Technology Preview.

Otherwise you would sysprep the image manually, store the vhd, and then create a template using the VHD.

It is a long slog yet before I would expect support to be there.

I thought that might be the case, but we managed to get win 8 templates back in 2008 VMM so thought I'd give it a shot.

Ah well, I'll have to create this on a request basis.

Cheers

You could only do that back then by spoofing the OS in the VM to SCVMM.

But, the unattend.xml format / options changed, so not everything would work on deployment.

It can be spoofed, but your mileage will vary.

And I don't recall the right click, create template option working back then.  You still had to create the template manually.

Which is really just the steps that I outlined.  The manual creation of a template vs. to automagic creation of a template.

I would always expect the manual creation to work.  You just have to tell SCVMM the OS on the VHD, since it has no way to know ;-)   Hence, spoofing the system.

Yep - deployment failed as you mentioned error below if your interested. This just isn't worth my time for the one or two machines that people want.

Thanks!

Hi Paul,

While what you are doing is not officially supported it is something we are looking at for VMM 2012 R2 with the upcoming release of Windows 10 client.

What build of Windows 10 client were you seeing the failure? Did you happen to try running sysprep manually to see if it would complete/shutdown the VM without error?

Thanks,
DeWitt

I completely understand, it was build 10074.

I believe I did try a 9xxx build also but I made no note of why it failed to see if it was the same reason.

I didn't try a manual Sysprep not make a note of what step it actually failed on. As it was not supported I thought it wasn't worth my effort in trying to force this to work given how little people will actually need this.

Adding an update at some point after Win 10 was released would be good though as we are a software development house, It will become required more and more. I don't want to have to wait till 2016 and upgrade hosts/vmm just for Win10.

Thanks
