Copy local users to a backup machine
We have a local server runningServer 2003 r2 sp2NO DOMAIN with about 100 users.I would like to copy the Users and Groups to a Backup server, running the same version of Server 2003 but different hardware. The hardware differences make Ghosting not an option. I have tried touse theSystem StateBackup from the Primary machince on the Backup, but it did not work as we had hoped. The backup would not boot. I have access to both servers and was trying to find a way to just "copy" the sam files? Is there a good way to get users and groups from one server to another? This is my last hurtle in making a fully functional backup serverI have found a way to my data files and security with RobocopyI have used the Registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\lanmanserver\Shares to get my shares defined.Computer Guy

This application looks like it may be able to do that. I'm not aware of a direct way to do that, without some VB scripting. http://www.sphere10.com/fileservermigrator/ Eric Irvin, MCP, MCSA, MCSE, MCITP:Enterprise Admin, CISSP http://www.diggingup.com

Thanks for the link. I tried the trial version of this, looks like a nice tools but it will not do the passwords. Hyena will get users and passwords for the same price but I think there is a way to do it for free. I have a very limited budget as your can tell.Computer Guy

Thanks for you help. I do not have a domain running and it does not look like Addusers will work on a server 2003 local machine. Computer Guy

Hi, Based on my experience, Microsoft does not have a tool to migrate the local users and groups from one computer to another. You can use the tool addusres.exe to export and import the local users and groups. However, the users password is not included. When creating the users on the new computer, the password is empty. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;250267 You may search the Internet to check if there is any third party tool that can fully address your requirement. If you just want to backup the local users and groups, I suggest that you perform a full backup for the system instead of migrating them to a new computer.
