Connection Status: not Responding SCVMM '08

I just installed SCVMM 2008 on a Windows 2008 x64 server with Hyper-V RC0 Enabled. From the console on the server it says "Needs Attention" and when I double click on it, it says

Connection Status: Not Responding

Agent Version: Up to Date

Virtualization Status: Unknown

Virtualization Service Version: Up-to-Date

The firewall is turned on for public network only, and I can connect to manage that box with the hyper-v mmc snap-in for Vista. Why is SCVMM not connecting to it? I rebooted the server after install and still can't get it to work correctly. It sees my VMs on the server but I can't connect to them either.

Thanks,

Chris

Howdie,

Is port 9100 opened? Or did you change the default port for the VMM Agent during installation? VMM connects with the default settings to the agent on Port 9100.

Is SCVMM 2008 installed on the same server as the Hyper-V host?

On the host server please restart the Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management Service.

April 30th, 2008 10:45pm

Yes SCVMM 2008 is installed on the same server as the host

I did restart the service and I get the same result.

I did not change any of the defaults for port numbers. I installed the Admin console on my Vista client and I can connect to the VMM Server but I get the same message that the host server needs attention

Ok, let me make sure I understand the flow of your scenario.

1. You had already installed on Win2k8 64bit Hyper-V RC0 host.

2.Currently you can connect to the Hyper-V host using the Hyper-V management tools and see your running VMs.

3. You installed SCVMM 2008 on the server HyperV host.

4. You installed the SCVMM console on your Vista desktop.

5. When you click on the SCVMM console on your desktop you are able to make a connection to the SCVMM server successfully.

6. In the hosts view, you imported the Hyper-V server into SCVMM.

7. When the import completed the host was in a "Needs Attention" state.

Is this the scenario?

Hi,

If you go to the Jobs view and look at the latest job for that host (typically a host refresh job), what do you see there? And what error message do you get?

Also, what firewall profile is on your Win2k8 host? Check to make sure that port 80 and port 443 are not blocked.

Thanks,

Cheng

Carmen, you are a 100% correct. That is exactly what happens. Since I last posted I tried turning the firewall off completely, as well as removing the host from SCVMM and adding it again with no success.

May 1st, 2008 7:18pm

What's the error message you see in your jobs view? Also, was the host managed by VMM 2007 before? Does the host (in "Needs Attention" state) have v1 agent installed? Did you remove the v1 agent?

If your host still has v1 agent on it, it will fail to communicate with VMM v2 server and the host will be in "Needs Attention" state. Check your "Programs and Features" to make sure that the agent you have on your host is VMM 2008. If it's VMM 2007, you will need to first remove the host from VMM console, uninstall the agent from the host, and re-add the host from VMM console.

Let me know if this helps.

Thanks!

I did not have SCVMM 2007 installed before either as a host or agent. Here is what I have in my most recent job log for refresh host:

Error (500)

Could not retrieve configuration data from the virtual machine host Win2k8

(The operation completed successfully (0x0))

Recommended Action

Verify that Windows Management Instrumentation, Windows Remote Management (WS-Management), Virtual Server, and Virtual Machine Manager Agent services are running on Win2k8. Then try the operation again.

I restarted both those services, as they were both running.

Does this apply to your Win2k8 host?

Refreshing a Windows Server 2008 host while a USB flash drive is inserted causes the host to stop responding

When the host refresher runs on a host that has a USB flash drive recently inserted, the host goes into a Not Responding state. To return the host to a usable state, remove the USB flash disk and then refresh the host from the VMM Administrator Console.

Awesome! That was it... except it was a Dell Virtual USB device for the DRAC. I told windows to "safely remove" and bingo! it worked!! Thanks!

Awesome, glad to help. Thanks for trying out VMM and we look forward to your feedback.

I have a host that has started exhibiting the exact same behavior. This system is an IBM Blade and has had the remote media tray mounted to it (which adds an USB drive). I have remove the devices, restarted the WinRM, VMM, and Hyper-V Manager services but am still unable to refresh the host.

Does this require a host reboot to correct the issue?
May 22nd, 2008 6:56am

I get the same issue except that I don't have any USB devices plugged into the server,

I have got Windows server 2008 Enterprise X64 with Hyper-V enabled and I have installed update KB950049 on the Hyper-V server ,I haveanother machine running windows server 2008 X64 Enterprise and SCVMM 2008.

in the job list I get the following error

Error (500)

Could not retrieve configuration data from the virtual machine host srv-hv01.int.bakeer.co.uk.

Recommended Action

Verify that Windows Management Instrumentation, Windows Remote Management (WS-Management), Virtual Server, and Virtual Machine Manager Agent services are running on srv-hv01.int.bakeer.co.uk. Then try the operation again.

I have installed the agent supplied with SCVMM 2008, and when I create a VM I get stuck at the page where you specify the host as there are no hosts showing, the host is listed in the main console under Hosts, with a "Need attention" Status next to the host name in the middle Pane.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks

I have exactly this problem and no USB device (anymore and have rebooted).

I can connect fine to a host on another server, but not to the host on the same server.

The whole server was only built a couple of weeks ago from ground up with the latest software available specifically to test SCVMM 08.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Cheng

Thanks for your post.

In the end the release of SCVMM '08 RTM over took this and I decided to try to upgrade.

However the Upgrade from Beta was causing such problems that I ended up ripping everythinig out and starting again.

Happily this problem did not occur with the RTM evaluation version and I can now move on to another set of problems :-)

October 27th, 2008 6:33pm

I have host Status = Needs Attention for the same host on the RTM version of SCVMM 08.

Bothe VMM and Host are running on the same physical machine.

SCVMM shows same issue when run on the server or on a Vista 64xclient.

I can connect and refresh, but the host is not available when I want to provision (although it is flagged as being available).

Details on the Status tab shows "Virtualization service status: Unknown"

All other status are fine (e.g. Virtualization service version = Up-to-date).

I have reviewed all the literature Cheng has mentioned and I cannot see anything wrong and I have compared the settings with another Host that is working fine.

Any ideas?

I'm having very similar erros, I have read all posted blogs in this thread and followed all instructions with no luck.

This is what Im getting;

Error (2912)

An internal error has occurred trying to contact an agent on the virtualqa1.PFDOMAIN.prairiefyre.com server.

(Unknown error (0xc0000bbf))

Recommended Action

Ensure the agent is installed and running. Ensure the WS-Management service is installed and running, then restart the agent.

Connection Status: Not Responding

Agent Status: Responding

Agent Version: Up-to-Date

Virtualization service status: Running

Virtualization service version: Up-to-Date

I have already applied KB956589 and KB956774.
I did have a USB External Drive connected to the Host, which I have disconnected and have rebooted the host afterwards.

I have installed SCVMM 2008 RTM Server on my Host machine, which is the Hyper-V server.
I have also setup the SCVMM tracing according to the post in this thread. Here is what I see:

Pure speculation, but is there any chance we are both still having problems because we did have a USB external drive attached and this has left a residual setting that is causing the problem?

A long shot I think as I did a fresh install of SCVMM RTM with a new SQL database, but worth mentioning nonetheless.

I spent a day searching for a resolution to this issue. I installed the PRO integration this afternoon and the problem came up again. The PRO alter in OpsMgr gave me the search term I needed. That led me here and to the above link.

I use restricted groups to control the local administrators group and I didn't know I had to add the VMM server (or a domain group containing the server) to the local admins group. I did that, forced policy and refreshed the server and VM's in VMM. That sorted it out.

Thanks for the above blog post and if anyone in MSFT is reading, please pass on my thanks to the PRO authors!

Thanks to everyone that helped with the questions.

Cheng, I did go through this article and it did not help my particular issue.

Since this is a live production box I could not spend anymore time troubleshooting it. I rebuilt the machine today and everything is working now.

Thanks again to everyone for there suggestions.

Hi All

Like many others I was struggling with the "Connection status: Unknown" problem. Removing and re-adding the host / cluster didn't help.

Eventually it turned out to the performance counters on the host were corrupt. Performance Monitor said "Failed to initalize the snap-in" and only showed a few counters - the basic ones like CPU / disk were missing.

As administrator I ran "LODCTR /R". Performance Monitor started working and after a refresh in SCVMM it came up good.

Thank you very much Ian Goodwin, your resolution has solved my problem with 1 cluster member that simply would not connect to SCVMM with the issues as described in this article but after running the performance counters fix it immediatley refreshed and registered correctly in SCVMM.

I have spent almost 3 day's trying to fix this and now I am happy again.
