Confusing DNS issue on Windows Server 2008 R2
Setup Win2k8Server1 is DNS server
Win7Client has Win2k8Server1 as its DNS server
Remote host has a domain a.com, which has two CNAME records:
mail.a.com which points to mail.a.net
citrix.a.com which points to citrix.a.net
From win7client, mail.a.com resolves just fine, however citrix.a.com comes up as non-existent domain
NSlookup to any other external DNS servers (like 8.8.8.8) works fine. If I setup forwarders on Win2k8 server to 8.8.8.8 the clients resolve fine.
Any ideas as to why one record in the zone a.com resolve correctly however another record in the same zone configured identically come up as non-existant domain?
Thanks
-Shah

Hello,
Please make sure that you have an A record named citrix in the a.net zone with the correct IP address.
Also, please make sure that your client computer is poiting to your internal DNS server as
primary DNS server.

Thanks for the reply, but yes, the records are verified.
If you do nslookup with 8.8.8.8 (google's DNS servers), the records are resolved correctly. It is just windows clients/server which are unable to resolve the records from the Nameservers of the domain.
However, one cname record is being resolved, another one isn't, and its configured identically on the server.
Thanks

Hi Shah,
Thanks for posting here.
So are both zones hosted on same DNS server ? or perhaps you have set replication for zone a.net between few servers ?
And what if directly perform same querying command on that DNS server , will it work properly ?
You might need clean local DNS cache on client first and try again to see how is going .

Tiger,
Thanks for your response.
No, both zones are hosted on separate DNS servers.
Same query command on the nameserver of the zone fails from a windows client. But if you specify another server:
nslookup
server 8.8.8.8
set type=A
citrix.a.com
- this works fine
however if you do:
nslookup
server ns1.a.com
set type=A
citrix.a.com
- this fails with non existent domain
however mail.a.com works just fine!
So another server like google's dns server is able to read the citrix.a.com entry however windows dns server/client are not able to.
Any ideas?

Hi Shah,
Thanks for posting here.
If it works when specify to use other public DNS servers, I’d suspect some name resolution issues on your exist DNS servers might cause these
.
So was there any problem to directly resolve “mail.a.net” or “citrix.a.net”
on both DNS server and client without DNS forwarder setting by using nslookup? and what are the DNS servers they pointing to use ? please post unedited “ipconfig /all” results from both server and client here for further investigation.
You might also enable DNS debug logging in order to obtain the detail information on the querying process :
