Clients are very slow to login to the domain Windows 2003
I am working in a schoolwhere we have4 ICT suites with 25 PCs each and ofcourse students are changing rooms and logging in to the system in different room diffrent lissons. The domain controllers are Server 2003, STD Edition, 32bits,SP2. the Primary domain controller HP ML370 Generation4 with 3GB ram, which hosts DHCP, DNS WSUS, Sophos Enterprise consol, Backup exec 12.5, about 22 different GPOsboth for users and computersand it is also a file server . Every thing was running absolutely smoothly for 3 years butin the past couple of weeks all clients at once slows down in login process (12-15 Minutes to reach the desktop) and it stays like thatfor a well long time I either have to wait an hour or 2 and then suddenly everything becomes fine or I have to restart the serverand as soon as i restart the server everything becomes fine. the confusing thing is that the only account that logs in ok is the Administrator account we have other administrator accounts i.e PSmith etc but it logs in as slow as the other users. Here is a part of thedebug log of one of the client machines, because of the cahracter constrains on this forum I couldnt enclude the whole log:USERENV(b8.fd8) 16:40:30:473 UnloadUserProfile: Entering, hProfile = <0x2e8>USERENV(b8.fd8) 16:40:30:473 GetInterface: Returning rpc binding handleUSERENV(2f4.cf8) 16:40:30:473 IProfileSecurityCallBack: client authenticated.USERENV(2f4.cf8) 16:40:30:473 DropClientContext: Got client token 000000F4, sid = S-1-5-18USERENV(2f4.cf8) 16:40:30:473 MIDL_user_allocate enterUSERENV(2f4.cf8) 16:40:30:473 DropClientContext: load profile object successfully madeUSERENV(2f4.cf8) 16:40:30:473 DropClientContext: Returning 0USERENV(b8.fd8) 16:40:30:473 UnLoadUserProfile: Calling DropClientToken (as self) succeededUSERENV(2f4.31c) 16:40:30:488 IProfileSecurityCallBack: client authenticated.USERENV(2f4.31c) 16:40:30:488 UnloadUserProfileP: Entering, hProfile = <0x940>USERENV(2f4.31c) 16:40:30:488 UnloadUserProfileP: ImpersonateUser <000000f4>, old token is <00000000>USERENV(2f4.31c) 16:40:30:488 GetExclusionListFromRegistry: Policy list is empty, returning user list = <Local Settings;Temporary Internet Files;History;Temp>USERENV(2f4.31c) 16:40:30:488 CSyncManager::EnterLock <S-1-5-21-494454706-4113400361-1776975543-500>USERENV(2f4.31c) 16:40:30:488 CSyncManager::EnterLock: No existing entry foundUSERENV(2f4.31c) 16:40:30:488 CSyncManager::EnterLock: New entry createdUSERENV(2f4.31c) 16:40:30:488 CHashTable::HashAdd: S-1-5-21-494454706-4113400361-1776975543-500 added in bucket 6USERENV(2f4.31c) 16:40:30:488 UnloadUserProfileP: Wait succeeded. fine) i also did the following tonarrow down the possibilities:1) I have created a OU on the main DC and blocked policy inheretance on it and moved a couple of PCs and users to it for testing purpose but even then the login is as slow. 2) I have removed the script (which maps network drives) from the Profile tab of the test useraccount in AD and still no avail.3) In the event log of both clients and server there is not anything that seems problematic or relevant specially if all PCs are slow then there should be consistancy in the error log which there isnt.Note: all client PCs are OS > Windows XP, with SP3.Please, please help me I am lost.

What type of profiles are you using? How large are they or are you just using local profiles?DNS is usually the culprit. Clear your DNS entries both forward and reverse and then go to a workstation as an admin and run ipconfig /flushdns and ipconfig /registerdns and see if it registers properly.Make sure DNS is setup correctly on the workstationshttp://www.sd61.bc.ca/windows2000/Frames/DNS.htmlGo to the Group Policy and run all startup scripts visible for users and see if one is hanging. That is a few places to start. Also check the event logs and the Group Policy Management tool.Set your DNS to automatically get rid of old stale DNS records. (instructions from a colleage of mine) - Open the DNS MMC - Expand the reverse lookup zone and select your subnet. Note the # of records at the top. - Right-click the server - Set aging/scavenging for all zones - Tick Scavenge stale resource records - Set no-refresh interval to 1 day (or whatever your setup dictates) - Set refresh interval to 1 day (once again, up to you) - OK - Open D:\options\win2003cd\SUPPORT\TOOLS\SUPTOOLS.MSI on the server (unless you moved the copy of the files elsewhere) and run it through its course - Open a command window cd to %ProgramFiles%\Support Tools\ -Run: dnscmd <server> /EnumZones - Run: dnscmd <server> /AgeAllRecords <zone> eg. dnscmd host/AgeAllRecords 1.31.142.in-addr.arpa (you can omit the server if you run it locally) - Go back to the DNS MMC, right-click the server or zone then hit Scavenge Records - Compare the # of records in your zone, it should be less if there were records scavenged.Cheers,Laralforbes

Hello, was there a change in the DNS settings? Slow logon very often relies on that, so make sure the clients and DCsuse only domain DNS servers and none other like your ISPs DNS.An unedited ipconfig /all from a problem client and the DNS server can be helpful as well.Best regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

Hello, Also you might want to look at user's profile.. This issue might be as result of corrupt user profile. Start by deleting or creating a new user and copy profile oftroubled user to new userand attempt to login againIsaac Oben MCITP:EA, MCSE

Thanks for your respons:1.We dont use roaming profile. This is how the Profile tab of the user accont in AD is configured:Profile Path: this field is blankLogon script: Pupil.bat >> pupil.bat is a script that maps 4 share drives to the user profilesLocal Path: this field is not used Connect: this filed is mapping the home directory of the user to letter H and the Path is \\fbspdc01\username$2.I have delete ALL pointers and records in the dns server and logged in to on of the client PC and flushed dns and then Registerdns and then checked the dns server to see if the new registration worked and there it was. The new registration appeard with the right IP address of the client both in Records and in Pointers. This means the DNS is working fine.So I dont no what is causing it as I said the machines are periodically slowing down not all the time i.e Everything will be ok all day butsuddenly the teacher knocks on my office door and says "Logins are very slow again but it was fine 10 minutes ago", that is the time that logins take upto 15 minutes, There is nothing suspiciouse in the event log either, when I restart the DC everything turns back to normal OR we have to wait for an uncertain amount of time 1-2-3 hours and everything will become ok. I have no scheduled tasks running at the time either. When I list te GPOs on the client using gpresult you see allthe right GPOs being applied.

If you don't use roaming profiles do you have a Default Domain profile or is everyone just getting the default windows desktopprofilewithout any applications on it?I am wondering if there is corruption with the local profiles. Remember that with local profiles people can save ANYTHING to the desktop or the My Documents folder and on the workstation and that stuff is never deleted.Have you done a virus scan or a spyware scan?Is there anything in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE-Software-Microsoft-Windows-CurrentVersion-Run section? That will load on user logon so there maybe a setup file or an update file like java or something trying to load.I recommend using a mandatory profile in your type of domain. It will prevent users from saving anything locally. http://www.sd61.bc.ca/windows2000/Frames/Profiles.htmllforbes

When I say we dont have a roaming profile I say this based on the Profile Path field in the profile tab of the user property in AD which is blank and not pointing to any folder or file.As I said in my previouse reply here is how the profile tab of the user looks in AD:We dont use roaming profile. This is how the Profile tab of the user accont in AD is configured:Profile Path: this field is blankLogon script: Pupil.bat >> pupil.bat is a script that maps 4 share drives to the user profilesLocal Path: this field is not used Connect: this filed is mapping the home directory of the user to letter H and the Path is \\fbspdc01\username$We have a group policy appliied to all users that prevents them from many things including: saving to the desktop, saving to the MyDocument folder on the local machine, C drive of the local machines is not visible to them, they cant save to the local C drive, No control pannel, No command line, no right click, no rights or access to the Run or Startup folder on local machine, no rightto change wallpaper theyjust a standard windows desktop wall paper which is getting mapped through the group policies. There are alot of restrictions through the GPO because it is a school we dont want pupils to have many options "get on with your study". I just checked the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE-Software-Microsoft-Windows-CurrentVersion-Run section, you will see Java and acouple of other application that we provide for kids to use loading including quick time. I dont think this is a problem becuase they were always there and we had no problemIMPORTANT: One point to keep in mind is: why arent these domain client always slow to login? why clients can login very fast all day and suddenly the login become slow and then a restart or a long wait will bring everything back to normal and then the login becomes absolutely normal/fast, If the loading of the application or profile was the case why is it not happenning at all time? why is it occasional i.e once or twice a day.

Have you checked your actual wiring? Slow logins can also be caused by a cascade in the network which means students plug both ends of one cable into the wall causing a loop. It could also be caused by a failing switch or a malfunctioning network card in a computer. The mini hubs or switches can also cause network bandwith issues. What do the lights on your switches look like? A cascade has them blinking very rapidly. Also do you have Windows 2003 SP2 applied to your Server. There was a huge issue with it outlined in this KB. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948496/I applied this patch to ALL my Servers after installing SP2 and it fixed a lot of the network issues. One thing to note. IF you don't have roaming profiles (in the profile tab) then a NEW profile must be created on the computer whenever a user logs into the machine. To create this profile takes quite a bit of time. Therefore if a user has a profile created on that machine already then will be fast to login. However, if the user has not logged into that machine and therefore doesn't have a profile created then it will take FAR longer. That is the reason I use mandatory profiles as I outlined in my previous link. Create mandatory profiles for the users and store them on the server and put the path in the profile path. Therefore a new profile won't have to be created every time.Cheers,Laralforbes

We have checked our switches and cabling and there is no loops generated (both ends blugged in to outlets) and our switches are ok too, and even if it was the case the network will come to a hault and it will be slow at all times but in our senario it is very speedy for many hours and it suddenly slows down, i.e there has been occasion that the network will be fine for a whole day and suddenly the problem will reappear the next day. We have SP 2 installed on all of our servers. I appreciate the fact that the first logon will be slower because the profile is not on the local machine but this has been the setup for years and we had no such issues normally first time loggin will take about 1 minute and subsequent logins are less than 30 seconds in our invironment but now it takes 15 minutes. So I am sure it is not the local profile creation that causes this rediculous delay.

hello check two things. the schedule for the Anti virus software and do you have exchange in any of these DCs?Also, just out of curiousity, check the NIC settings with the switch/router. For example if server is set to 100MB and switch is set to something else and vice versa, you might see these intermittent slow login issues Isaac Oben MCITP:EA, MCSE

Thanks for the reply. We have stoped all schedule tasks both on the clients and the server. We do have an Exchange server...Our switches are not managed.ThanksMasoud
