Client OS on VM's

Team,

After creating VM's using Hyper-V Server 2012, am I allowed to deploy client images say Win 7 on those VM's. If yes,

Do I need to be licensed for each client images that is deployed on respective VM's ?

Thanks

Hi,

for usinf Client VMs(windows7, 8, 8.1) on the Windows Server, you need the VDA subscription license for each device have Access to Windows VM Client on the Server. the VDA licenses are licensed as subscription in open value contract.

thanks

Thanks for your response diramoh.

I am under Select Plus agreement, volume licensing.

Scenario- I have a Windows server 2008 data center licensed to a physical machine. From the physical host I have created 5 VM's.

3 VM's OS - Installed with Windows Server 2008 Standard

2 VM's OS - I would like to install Windows 7 image. Please explain how to be on complaint.

Hi Srini,

I can answer your question only about licensing issue. I'm not a technical specialist.

for licensing, I confirm that with your datacenter Edition you have unlimited VMs for Windows Server instances.

for installing a Windows 7 Image on the 2 VMs, you need to have an active Software assurance for your Windows Clients (includes VDA benefit) OR you add the VDA subscription license on your existing Select plus Agreement for each device wants access to Windows 7 on the Server.

with the VDA licenses you can download Windows 7 pro(free) from VLSC and install it on the Server and each device licensed with VDA have access to Windows 7 VM Image on the Server. if the existing devices have a qualified OS like Windows 7 pro, XP pro, Vista Business, ... you may install up to four VMs of Windows Clients on the licensed device with VDA.

I hope that it is clear about licensing issue. if you have more licensing questions do not hesitate to ask me.

thanks

Dear diramoh,

Do I need to procure Windows 7 licenses to deploy on VM's or I can deploy the standard images ?

If standard images - It includes office as well, so do I need to procure office licenses ?

regards

Srini

Hi Srini,

you need to have the license of Windows 7 but the licensing model for Windows 7 as VM installed on the Server is licensed with active Software assurance OR with VDA subscription license while you cannot use the OEM or the FPP license on the Server than users wants have Access to this license.

thanks
