Changing Windows 2000 member computer's name...
Hello, I have a Windows 2000 sever, that is a NT 4 Domain member. I have to change the computer name by using the minimum amount of administrative effort and trying to maintain the group/user id's information. I was told that renaming a NT domain member requires you to create a new computer account and also to leave the domain, restart, rejoin the domain and restart again. I'm concerned that any domain id's/groups that were in local groups may be lost, even though we're adding the server back into the same domain. I'm also thinking about file/web permissions from the domain. Is there a way to retain the SID information ? Do we really need to remove the server from the domain before changing the name? As long as the new computer account has already been created, wouldn't this work ok? Thanks. Pablo.
