Changing Desktop location without reboot
Is there any way to change the directory to which the desktop links to without restarting the system? So if my desktop is currently configured to c:\example\myprofile1. In the registry I could change it to point to d:\secondchoice And have that change take effect without restarting the system?

Hi Cheshire43, what is the operating system you are using ?Are these clients part of domain or workgroup ?There are many considerations you would need to make , if you want to redirect my documents then you can right click --> properties -_> change the location of the my document folder of each users. For profile redirection / setting up roaming profile please follow the below procedure. Are you thinking of profile redirection ? or are you plannign for creating a roaming profile if so step1 : create a shared folder named XXX in your file server and share it with NTFS permissions with everyone as read accessstep2 : create sub folder in the parent folder XXX which should match users names step3 : And navigate to the ADUC --> users profile --> under profile path point to the file server You can also use GP to enable the same. sainath !analyze

The desktop is part of a domain, I am running Vista Enterprise x86. The mention of 'profile1' was an illustration for a directory structure. For example, there is reference to the desktop settings under: hku\#-#-#-#\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\shell folders But changing that changes nothing. So how do I change the location the 'desktop' points to without restarting the system?

Hi, Is this user a domain user or local user? If it is a domain user, I suggest you use Folder Redirection feature. Please refer to the following articles: Folder Redirection http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc781907(WS.10).aspx How to Configure Folder Redirection http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc782799(WS.10).aspx After that, you just need to re-logon the user to apply the redirected desktop path. System restart is not required. If it is a local user, I would like to suggest that you initial a new thread in our Vista IT Pro forum for better and accurate answer to the question. The community members and support professionals there are more familiar with Vista Operation System and can help you in a more efficient way.
