Cannot use Role & Features, Cannot instal .Net, Server 2008 Std.
I have a DC (not PDC) running Windows Server 2008. I am unable to access the Roles & Features functions either through the GUI or the command prompt. This started happening at the same time that I started recieving an error from Windows Update indicating that it could not install update KB951847. (This is the .Net framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 update.)I tried downloading KB951847 from the Microsoft Update Catalog, however this gave me an error message saying that I needed to run "setup.exe" in order to install the software. The only problem is that no setup.exe was included in the download.I then tried downloading the .Net Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 installer from downloads.microsoft.com. When I tried to install this I recieved a log with the following error messages:[06/24/09,21:56:46] Optional Component 'Microsoft .Net Framework 3.0 (x64)': [2] Error code 1168 for this component means "Element not found."[06/24/09,21:56:46] Optional Component 'Microsoft .Net Framework 3.0 (x64)': [2] Component Optional Component 'Microsoft .Net Framework 3.0 (x64)' returned an unexpected value.[06/24/09,21:56:46] Optional Component 'Microsoft .Net Framework 3.0 (x64)': [2] Return from system messaging: Element not found. [06/24/09,21:56:47] WapUI: [2] DepCheck indicates Optional Component 'Microsoft .Net Framework 3.0 (x64)' is not installed.[06/24/09,22:17:15] Optional Component 'Microsoft .Net Framework 3.0 (x64)': [2] Error code 1168 for this component means "Element not found."[06/24/09,22:17:15] Optional Component 'Microsoft .Net Framework 3.0 (x64)': [2] Component Optional Component 'Microsoft .Net Framework 3.0 (x64)' returned an unexpected value.[06/24/09,22:17:15] Optional Component 'Microsoft .Net Framework 3.0 (x64)': [2] Return from system messaging: Element not found. [06/24/09,22:17:16] WapUI: [2] DepCheck indicates Optional Component 'Microsoft .Net Framework 3.0 (x64)' is not installed. It appears that it is complaining that .Net 3.5 is dependent on having .Net 3.0 installed first. So then I went back to downloads.microsoft.com and downloaded the installer for .Net Framework 3.0. Upon trying to use this installer, I recived the following message:You must use the Role Management Tool to install or configure Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0.This is a problem because I am unable to use the Role Management Tool. How can I restore the functionality of Roles & Features?

I should add that this is for the 64-bit version of Server 2008.

Hi, Please perform Darrell's suggestions to use System Update Readiness Tool check your system. I suspect you are encountering the "CBS MUM Missing" issue. The following post discussed the similar issue related to "CBS MUM Missing", it may be helpful for you, you can refer to: Windows 2008 - Internet Explorer 7.0 Patch not installing - Management Console errors http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winservermanager/thread/8f85073b-af2a-472f-95c8-c8dce3e60c71 Error View Role in Server Manager on Windows 2008 64 bits http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-CA/winservermanager/thread/f4e93571-6e3a-4c55-9115-54cc6bad1d32 Roles and Features wont load http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-CA/winservermanager/thread/520613b5-a49e-4983-99f3-ddd330e2513a Server Manager Errors http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-CA/winservermanager/thread/54758b9f-9b31-42c6-9316-1ce30cb8e982 Best regards, Vincent Hu

Hello Darrell,Thank you for the response. Here is what is contained in the log:=================================Checking System Update Readiness.Binary Version 6.0.6001.22375Package Version 5.02009-07-06 12:23 Checking Deployment Packages Checking Package Manifests and catalogs. Could this still be my problem? How would I go about getting a copy of this file if I do not have another Server 2008 x64 machine from which to copy it?

I found the update package for KB961063 on the Microsoft Update Catalog site. I downloaded it and extracted the files from the cabinent. Unfortunately, the file that my server is missing, Package_for_KB961063~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.0.1.0.mum,was not contained in the cabinent. What is contained in the cabinent is two files that appear to make up the single file my server is looking for:package_1_for_kb961063~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.0.1.0.mumpackage_2_for_kb961063~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.0.1.0.mumWhich file do I use? Or is there another file I need to obtain? Thank you!

Hello Mike4321,I suspect that last mum file is the update.mumrenamed to Package_for_KB961063~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.0.1.0.mum in the \servicing\packages folder.when the update.mum file is copied over it is renamed, so it would appear that this is the file name it was renamed to.Thanks, Darrell Gorter This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights

Hi Darrell,Your suggestion worked. I renamed update.mum and update.cat to Package_for_KB961063~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.0.1.0.mum and Package_for_KB961063~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.0.1.0.cat and placed them in the \servicing\packages folder. Now when I run the System Update Readniess tool I get a clear log file:=================================Checking System Update Readiness.Binary Version 6.0.6001.22375Package Version 5.02009-07-07 16:46 Checking Deployment Packages Checking Package Manifests and catalogs. Checking package watchlist. Checking component watchlist. Checking packages. Checking component storeSummary:Seconds executed: 171No errors detected ------And now Roles andFeatures are both working flawlessly. Thank you for your help!
