Cannot move folders from shares with thumbs.db
Hello I am using Windows Storage Server 2008 SP2 64bit. I have many shares set up on this server. I often need to archive data and usually move the data to another machine and make additional copies to DVD. I do this by accessing the shared folders from my XP machine. When I try to move folders that contain a thumbs.db file, the following message is displayed: Confirm File Move Are you sure you want to move the system file 'Thumbs.db'? When I click yes, either the file will be moved or an error is displayed saying that the file cannot be found and the move process is halted. If I open the unmoved folders I can manually move the thumbs.db file to the desired location. Is there a way that I can avoid this? Some of the folders I have to archive are massive and many contain thumbs.db files. Thanks

Hi RealBlood, I suggest you delete this file and disable Thumbnail cache file, it won't happen again. Please try the following thread to resolve the issue. When I try to delete a thumbs.db file under Win7 on a network drive it fails because the file is opened by Win Explorer. http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7files/thread/655e92c5-9a71-411f-8a47-c5b4c834d652/ Brent Hu, TechNet Subscriber Support in forum If you have any feedback on our support, please contact tngfb@microsoft.com Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Thanks very much for your reply. Although this turns the feature off, it does not help my present situation. The thumbs.db files, because they already exist are still preventing any move operations from completing. There are a lot of these files. Thanks anyway. Does anyone know how I can move the folders without these files halting the process, please?

Hi RealBlood, Did you delete all of the thumbs_*.db files as Shinmila's suggestion in the above link? In order to move these folders smoothly, I suggest you delete thumbs_*.db firstly. You can search and delete thumbs_*.db files via the following windows search tool as well. Windows Search 4.0 for Windows Vista x64 Edition http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=D45E9B5E-B52A-489C-A935-172F0002C492&displaylang=en Brent Hu, TechNet Subscriber Support in forum If you have any feedback on our support, please contact tngfb@microsoft.com Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question. OK, thanks, I'll do this. I use Everything to keep tabs on the files on my drive so I can use that instead of Windows Search.
