Cannot install windows server r2 in a desktop for test
Hi, i'm planning for upgrading my servers to server 2008 r2. I need to install w2008 r2 in a desktop with intel corei5 760 and gigabyte p55-ud3l. After booting with the dvd a question pop's up asking for the CD/DVD controller... like an ahci preinstall
or something. I tried several controllers from gigabyte/intel and no of them worked. Can anyone help?

You might try changing cmos setup from AHCI to IDE mode.

Even if you install Windows Server 2008 R2 on your desktop, you will have driver problems. It is for that I recommand to you to install your new Windows Server 2008 R2 on a virtual machine.
Microsoft Virtual PC does not support 64bit OS. So, I think you should try other virtualization solutions like VMWARE.
I am currently using VMWare Workstation to run my Windows Server 2008 R2 server and perform tests.

Did you verify the controller/motherboard is even support for Windows 2008 R2?

If you don't know exactly what the CD/DVD controller driver is that is needed, i suggest re-isntalling your previous OS, looking at what driver is installed there, then attempting verify there is 2008 R2 driver available.
Some research a head of time may have prevented this issue. Usually you want to verify you have all the drivers for all your hardward before you install a new OS. That is easily done if you have an existing OS installed.

Hi,
I would like to suggest you install Windows Server 2008 R2 via USB Drive to bypass the optical drive. For the detailed steps, please refer to the following
article and try Option 2.
