Cannot install Server 2008 standard 64 updates or service pack 2
Installing service pack 2- downloaded outside of Windows updates tells me i need to install service pack 1. if i install service pack 2 from windows update, it tells me to install the "check for system update readiness tool". All other security updates fail with error 800b0100. When trying to install a security update, there is a system event that says: "Windows Servicing identified that package KB978886(Security Update) is not applicable for this system" Running the System update readiness tool gets: Checking System Update Readiness. what is the best way to get permissions to replace the old files? "Destination Folder Access Denied. You need permission to perform this action" Thanks

Hi, This can occur if you do not have enough permission to modify this folder. Let’s take ownership this folder: Right-click the Package folder. On the Security tab, click Advanced. On the Owner tab, click Edit. Select your current account in the “Change owner to:” list and click OK. Click OK again. Close the “Advanced Security Settings for Packages” window. Click Edit, click Add, type Everyone in the box and click OK. Click Everyone in the “Group or user names:” list, check the box below Allow and beside Full Control. Click OK. Click Yes. If you receive an error message, click Cancel and click OK. Now you should be able to copy the files into the Package folder. After copying the files, let’s change the ownership back: Right-click the Package folder. On the Security tab, click Advanced. On the Owner tab, click Edit. Click Other users or groups…, click Location, click your computer (the first one) and click OK. In the box, type NT Service\TrustedInstaller and click OK. Click OK twice. On the “Permissions for Packages” window, click Everyone and click Remove. Click OK and click Yes. If you receive an error message, click Cancel and click OK. Tim Quan - MSFT

I modified the permissions, copied the files and the updates/service pack continue to fail with the same error code.

no errors detected. i will try to do updates after work - it is a production machine so i cannot do updates during work hours unless there will not be a restart. do you recommend installing service pack 2 first? It is no longer listed in the important updates that are available but i have downloaded it. thanks
