Cannot add Win2k8 DC to SBS Domain
I have two DC's with the primary being SBS and the other being Win2k3 x64 R2. Currently the schema is at 30 for the domain and adprep will not take it any higher, regardless of what version of adprep I try to use it always tells me it's already been run
and does not need to be run again. But when I go to dcpromo the Win2k8 R2 box it tells me that it's necessary to run adprep.
Through some reading I have determined that the schema needs to be at 31 (instead of it's current 30) to add a Win2k8 R2 DC. But I don't think it's possible to adprep to 31 with the SBS box being the oldest DC and hosting Exchange.
I have tried several things including moving all FSMO roles over to the Win2k3 R2 box and using every version of adprep I can find.... but nothing has worked. I think I need to remove the SBS box as a DC but I am not sure what sort of repercussions I am
looking at as it's currently hosting Exchange and is the original DC.
Would really appreciate some advice! Thanks.

the version of adprep that you must use is the one included in the support folder of Windows 2k8 R2 Installation Disk. Did you tried using it?Se foi til, no se esquea de Marcar como Resposta. Cludio Costa - http://claudio-costa.blogspot.com

When I try to use that version of adprep on the SBS box it gives me an error that basically says that while that is a valid copy of adprep it's not the approriate version and cannot be run.

You might want to check with the SBS group but I believe that the SBS server must be the only DC. You can have multiple servers but only one domain controller with SBS.

Actually, you can have more than one DC, but all Operations Master must be in the SBS. This article is describing Features and Restrictions of the SBS distribution.

Do you have access to the ADPREP in the SBS 2008 R2 installation disk?Se foi til, no se esquea de Marcar como Resposta. Cludio Costa - http://claudio-costa.blogspot.com

Figured it out!
So far as I know there is just no way, not possible, to upgrade the schema (or adprep if you will) an SBS to the level that Win2k8 R2 requires. I could be wrong about this but I used every version of adprep off every OS disk I have (and I have a ton ranging
from SBS/2k3/2k3 x64 r2/2k8/etc). And you can't download any version unless it's off an ISO of a full OS image.
So, that said... Here's what I did:
I transferred all FSMO roles to the Win2k3 R2 box and then I made it the Operations Schema Master (this was a bit tricky as I had to run a command to add the Active Directory Schema snap-in to my MMC, you can google the command). Once the Win2k3 R2 DC had
all of that I was able to run adprep off the Win2k8 R2 disk and upgrade my DC schema to 31. DCPROMO ran like a champ after that on the Win2k8 R2 box.
Appreciate the responses though :)
