Hi Gary,
Firstly, please make sure that the remote computer is turned on and there is not network connectivity issue.
You can try to ping the remote computer (IP address and host name) on a Windows system from the same network.
Secondly, if Ping is successful, ensure that corresponding port for remote desktop connection is open on the remote computer.
You may disable Firewall on the remote computer temporarily to test.
