Cannot Join to a Domain.
Hi all. My name is Vusal and I'm from Baku.
I would like to pass 70-640 exam, and even I bought Microsoft book Configuring Windows Server 2008 Active Directory. Everyday I usually do exercises they provided...
Everything was good until I reached Joining Computer to a Domain.
First I say that all application installed on a virtual machine, running 6 client computers (DESKTOP101-103 / LAPTOP101-103) and One Windows Server 2008. Domain Controller name is SERVER01.
In adulation I have D-LINK router modem (WI-FI enabled). My Computer name is VUSALPC, with Windows Vista installed. My Domain name is contoso.com. But when I try to join a PC to a domain i must point CONTOSO, not CONTOSO.COM. Why is that????
When I try to connect DESKTOP101 through 103 (They are all Win XP SP3) I get error message Couldnt Join Domain CONTOSO. Access is Denied.
For LAPTOP01 through 103 (They are all running Windows Vista) i get error message "The following error occurred attempting to join to a domain CONTOSO. An attempt to resolve DNS name of a DC in a domain being joined has failed. Please verify
this client is configured to reach a DNS server that can resolve DNS names in target domain."
The NIC for SERVER01 as below (ipconfig info)
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : contoso.com
Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::902b:ffce:5cdb:6ecd%10
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.10
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
Tunnel adapter Local Area Connection* 9:
Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : contoso.com
Preffered DNS server IP is 192.168.1.1 too, as Default gateway. My router's DHCP is also 192.168.1.1. Not sure but I think they conflicting.
Or maybe my DNS server in Active Directory is not configured properly. But I have to say, while rising AD DC role I did everithing as was described in the book, step-by-step!!! Please guys, guide me... I really don't know what to do.
PS: I've uploaded video file (duration 6:16). You can watch it @ youtobe. Here's link... #mce_temp_url#

Hello,
It seems you not pointing to correct DNS server.
Preffered DNS should be 192.168.1.10 on the server. If it is a domian controller, make sure the DNS settings working properly by using nslookup command.
Thanks

Basically your DHCP server must hand out static address of AD server as primary DNS server address so clients can find DC. Then put the ISP's DNS addresses in the forward lookup of your DNS server so clients can find internet. Also make
sure your server has static IP address outside of DHCP scope.

Hi,
Thanks for posting here.
I agree that incorrect DNS server entry on client side may cause this issue , you may following the suggestions above to modify it and see how is going.
Meanwhile, I ‘d like share an article which discuss some ways to troubleshoot domain join issue with you:

Hi all, and thank you for replying
Tiger Li, there was described my issue at the webpage you provided. Here is resolution
When you type the domain name, make sure you type the DNS Domain Name, rather than the NetBIOS name. For example, if the DNS name of the domain is fabrikam.com, make sure you enter that name instead of just fabrikam
Instead, as I mentioned, when I type contoso.com, I get an error message, but when type just contoso I do not get any error messages.
MYousufAli, I changed proffered DNS server's IP address to host's IP address (e.g. 192.168.1.10)
Moreover, I am able to nsllokup server...
IU know it's annoying, but I reaaly don't know what to do?!
Thx in advance...

Hi,
Thanks for update.
It seems like incorrect DNS suffix setting or name resolution causes this issue.
Could you post “ipconfig /all” , “nslookup contoso.com”/”nslookup contoso” form
problematic
client computer here for further investigation?
Thanks.
Tiger Li

You have 192.168.1.1 as the DNS server in your client configuration, but your DC is 192.168.1.10

So what I gotta do???

Considering that SERVER01 is your domain controller, you should change the DNS server address on the client to 192.168.1.10

seems you have a DHCP service running on the router whihc is providing the ip address to the clients see below the dns mentioned is 192.168.1.1 in your case it should be 192.168.1.10

you manually point your dns server in the tcp/ip properties with 192.168.1.10http://www.virmansec.com/blogs/skhairuddin
February 16th, 2011 11:38am
Do as Syed said. Give the static IP address to client system, DNS pointing to 192.168.1.10 or else you can disable the DHCP on the D-Link and
Install the DHCP server on the server and configure the DHCP options.
You must specify the
DHCP Option 6 as 192.168.1.10 which is your DNS Server.
