Cannot Install 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2)
Have a client with a Dell PowerEdge 2900 configured with a RAID 5 using the Dell PERC 6/I, running 2008 Standard
Server x64 SP1 and Active Directory. I have attempted to Service Pack 2, probably five different times.
Looks like it goes through all the update stages; however, after Stage 3 gets to 100%, the sever reboots and reverts back to SP1.
After that reboot, the only error is a popup saying, “Installation was not successful.:
An unknown error has occurred.” I’ve looked at the logs and service pack log, but not much to work with.
At first, I figured that it was Dell drive issue (had that happen before with Dell.)
I called Dell and they SWEAR that it is not on their end.
The software on the server is: Adobe Reader, ATI Graphics, Broadcom NIC, Dell Open Manager, Microsoft Dot Net
and Visual C + 2008 both x64 and x86, and a proprietary product called Print Audit 6 by Sharp.
The UPS software has been removed, and I stopped all not essential services and startup options, except Dell DMS
services and LSI Logic (mr2kserv).
Any thoughts?

Ask in the Server 2008 Forums (and upload everything from the folder C:\Windows\logs\CBS), this forum is about Server 2008 R2 Sp1 (beta-RC)!"A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" CLIP- Stellvertreter http://www.winvistaside.de/

Hi,
If you run the SUR tool,
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
Does the log generated at c:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log come back clean?

There is a CBS.log file (huge 18 MB) from the last attempt to Service Pack. I suppose if you knew what you were looking for it might make some sense. I will run the "System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Server 2008 x64 Edition" and let
you know the results. Thanks.

zip the log file and upload the log to your SkyDrive [1] and post a link here.

Sorry that it has taken me this long. Just uploaded a HUGE file using skydrive. It contains several log zip files and a readme.txt file to explain. Now what?

Also you have issues installing WMI files.
Run chkdsk C: /r /f , sfc.exe /scannow and checkSUR [1]. Next try to install the Sp2 again.

Sorry didn't get back to you all on this. Appears Sharp added a program called Print Audit, which hosed the server somehow. Had to reinstall SP1, then could do SP2. Removed the Sharp app.
