Cannot Download and Install MS Updates on W2008 R2 Standard Server
Hi,
We have a Windows 2008 R2 Server in our environment, and we have not been able to successfully download and install MS Updates since 2nd August 2010. The last successful update was (KB981390), which was on that date. The next update (KB979099) is in
a Cancelled State, and the following update (KB978637) is in a Failed State which attempted to download and install on 3rd August 2010.
When attempting to download updates now, it continues to search for updates (indefiniately), and we cannot get it to the point where we need to install them.
This Server hosts our Blackberry Enterprise Server Express for Microsoft Exchange (v5.0.2 - Bundle 14). In addition, Blackberry Device Communication Components (v1.2.021) is also installed.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated, as it is critical we patch this server with the latest Microsoft Updates.
Thanks

did you try reseting the wu information already?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 has a detailed instruction on how to reset.
a less "aggressiv" approach is to download the two patches that are failed/cancelled for you and see what happens when you install them manually

Hi FZB,
Thanks for your reply.
Unfortunately when attempting this, that fix does not apply to the current Server OS (Windows 2008 R2 Standard), it appears it is for W7 OS's.
How do we reset the WU Information on a Windows 2008 R2 Standard OS ?

Hello,
try proceeding like that:
Run sfc /scannow and chkdsk /r /g Download and install System Update Readiness tool for your OS Disable all security softwares
If this does not help, you can perform an in-place upgrade of your OS.
Start by installing SP1 manually.

Hi,
Please manually reset Windows Update components by following the Microsoft KB article FZB provided.
If it does not work, please also try the System Update Readiness Tool as Mr X mentioned. For the detailed information, please refer to the following
Microsoft KB article:
Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista, for Windows Server 2008, for Windows 7, and for Windows Server 2008 R2

If some corrupted files cannot be fixed by checking the CheckSUR.log, you may also refer to the following Microsoft TechNet article for how to repair
them.

Red;
Do the same updates apply manually if you install them from the Download Center? If they do, then that would suggest the WU control may have become damaged in some way. You could find some potential errors with CheckSUR (mentioned above).
If they dont apply, then that suggests there might be an issue with the servicing stack itself. CheckSUR and SFC would be the preferred method for determing any existant corruption in that case.--Joseph [MSFT] http://blogs.technet.com/b/joscon/

OK. Isn't that update to a WSUS scanning component? If so, are you using WSUS in your environment?

Asking a silly question, did you ever activate the windows activation on the server? just notice that if you don't activate your copy windows update won't work
