Can I change Server 2008 R2 Domain Controller Motherboard?

Hello,
If the two mainboards are not identical, you may get stop errors when Windows tries to load the drivers for the wrong hardware. If this is the case, you may have to do some tweaking to the system as outlined by others in this post. If you want to test it
beforehand (good idea), perform a full disk backup then do a bare metal restore on the new machine.
As other have stressed, make sure you back up your data and your AD before doing any of this and try to set up a second DC. Another thing: In a server environment, it's always a good idea to purchase a brand name server versus building your own.
HP, DELL and IBM have standardized servers and you can get spare parts for 5-10 years down the road. With a clone, you may run into this same problem if your mainbaord or raid card stops working a couple years from now.

You dont have additional domain controller in your domain? I would recommaned you to install an additional domain controller to avoid this kind of situation
It is very difficult to tell , wheather new board will support the server or not.

You said both are Identical Mother boards , if this is the case most of the times it wil work. However please have the AD backup taken before making any changes
Refer below link which discuss the same problem -

Boot from safe mode and unistall the Asus drivers if needed. After the machine runs through it's POST (Power-on Self Test), and BEFORE Windows loads, press F8. You will then have several options. Select Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking,
and the machine will finish booting and go into Safe Mode.

After that check Device Manager (run cmd type devmgmt.msc).

and it's will automatically update the drivers of intel if not. please download the drivers from Intel site.

Hello,
server roles do not apply to the installed motherboard. It may be that you have to reactivate the server license after changing hardware.
But BEFORE changing it you should install a second DC/DNS/GC in the domain for failover and redundancy reasons.Best regards

I prefer you TAKE THE BACKUPS prior replacing the mother board if its so important otherwise don't do it as because even if the source and destination computers seem to be identical makes and models, there may be driver, hardware, or
firmware differences between the source and destination computers and if its Domain controller the please make an additional domain controller with active directory integrated dns.

Hi,
First of all check compatibility of hardware on both systemboards. If main modules (CPU, Chipset etc.) are using same drivers, just replace the system board, install missing drivers, setup the same ip configuration as you used to have and that's it. It should
not be a problem with HAL if you use the same chipset series.
System backup has to be done anyway unless you want to build or recover the server after each fault.
p.s. If you use hardware RAID, don't forget to check it's settings on new systemboard.
