Can't keep Windows Time set right
"Are domain controllers maybe VMs?" This one is, yes. Changing the time on the host solved it instantly. Thanks!!

I would just advise you further to disable the time sync (if you're using Hyper-V, look under properties of VM for Integration Service, and deselect time sync) so you don't get any such problem in the future. I'm glad that this helped you!

Hi! We're running a Windows 2008 R2 domain. The time across the network is 5 minutes off. Any machine I set the time on goes back to 5 minutes off. I located the PDC emulator server and tried to set the time on that. 2 seconds after I hit ok the time goes back to 5 minutes off. So I followed this article: How to Configure an Authoritative Time Server in Windows Server: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816042 But the registry is already set this way. So I followed instructions to sync time with an external NTP server (time.nist.gov). Time configuration says it's using this server but the time is still 5 minutes off and won't stay that way if I change it manually. How do I get this server and the rest of the network to keep the proper time? Thanks!

Just a thought, but you may want to check two things, First, does the networking devices have a time server function already configured. Second, are you using dchp for the clients on the network and what settings are the scope pusing out for time server information.-- :P Advice offered, If you need more help it is advised to seek the council and advice of paid professionals. The answer is always 42, or reboot.

Thanks... 1 - What networking devices are you referring to? 2 - I thought you may be onto something since our router does do DHCP and time configuration. The router is using NTP to get its time and is correct but good thinking. The time on the servers is still 5 minutes off.

Yes, I was thinking about the possiblity that you had a router providing time information across your network being off by 5, since you say the router is doing the dchp, then yes look at the scope options and see if its pusing out time information. check you dc time with this command: w32tm /monitor -- :P Advice offered, If you need more help it is advised to seek the council and advice of paid professionals. That's the weird thing, there are no scope options. It's a Sonicwall router and its DHCP configuration has no place for DHCP options like Time, DNS servers and so on. I can only assume the router isn't prividing the time. Also, the servers have static IP's and DNS settings so they're not operating by DHCP. (thx)

Hello, start fresh with removing all settings on the DC and use just the w32tm command line, registry changing is not needed and only recommended when advised from Microsoft. http://msmvps.com/blogs/mweber/archive/2010/06/27/time-configuration-in-a-windows-domain.aspx My blog contains all steps to set the service to default and use w32tm command. Make sure to run the commands in an elevated command prompt.Best regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees , and confers no rights.

Are domain controllers maybe VMs? (I'm just asking because some people forget to disable time sync between host and VM, and then they have such problems)
