Can't join Windows Server 2008 R2 domain
You may have incorrect configuration in DNS. 1. Check you dns services is running on serverr side 2. check you are able to ping you server using IP Addrss 3. check you are getting you dns server address correctly. if not, assign IP manully. use these below steps; you will surely resolve this problem.Kamal Sharma

I'm assuming this is a home network(testlab). How do you have the server and client connected? are you just using a switch or a switch/router? if you are using some sort of device that acts as a dhcp server make sure that is disabled. Disable all network adapters on your client except for the one you plan on using. Statically set it to ip=192.168.0.10 netmask=255.255.255.0 gw=<whatever that is> primary dns=192.168.0.180. Also, since I'm not sure how you configured this. You did run dcpromo on the server to make it a DC correct otherwise you are just a server. If you have done all that, then create a host record in DNS on the server with the name and static ip you are using 192.168.0.10. Also disable all firewalls on both the client and server. Let me know your results.

We have an ADSL modem and a switch, because there's too few RJ45 holes in the ADSL modem. ADSL modem is not used as DHCP server. All unnecessary NICs are disabled on both computers. My client's IP settings are correctly set. I have host record in my DNS server which contains server's name and IP as data. I've tried to disable all firewalls, nothing changes.

from the client trying running this at a command prompt ipconfig /flushdns and ipconfig /registerdns. Also download and install the support tools or run them from the installation disc. After you have done run a dcdiag and netdiag and let me know the results. I'm sure you have posted this some place but if you could run ipconfig /all from both client and server and post those. Thanks

Your node type should not be unknown, it should be hybrid. change these parameters in the registery. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netbt\Parameters\ - and you should have a key called EnableProxy change the value to 0 or 1 and reboot the computer. Any reason why you have IP Routing enabled on the server? You can change that here HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters - change the value from 1 to 0. Thanks

Hi I have Windows Server 2008 R2 server and XP Professional client. I've installed and configured DHCP and DNS servers on the server. My client uses the Windows Server to resolve DNS queries and it gets its IP there. They both are in the same home network. My problem is connecting Windows XP to Windows Server 2008 R2 domain. When I try to do it on My Computer -> Properties -> Computer Name -> Change, I got this error. The error was: "DNS name does not exist." (error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR) How I can connect my XP to the domain peltoset.local? Ask me for more details, I'm not sure what do you need. I already posted this on another category and I was advised to post it here too. Here's the link http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/itproxpsp/thread/938e37f1-89e0-4d0f-844b-0830cb5f5a59

This will make ppl confuse please stick to one thread http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/itproxpsp/thread/938e37f1-89e0-4d0f-844b-0830cb5f5a59 http://www.virmansec.com/blogs/skhairuddin

Hi Mikko, There is a bad configuration somewhere in your DNS To work around the issue, first on your XP client PC, manually set the preferred DNS to the IP of your domain controller server, reboot and try adding it to the domain again. This should work. Martin If you find my information useful, please rate it. :-)

Hello, please disable RRAS on the server as this is not recommended to run on a DC, then run ipconfig /flushdns and ipconfig /registerdns and restart the netlogon service. According to the the dcdiag error about DNS please make sure the DC/DNS server is registered in the forward/reverse lookup zone with it's A and Nameserver record. Additional make sure the DHCP client service is started and set to automatic on it, required for correct DNS registration. As your DC seems to have several problems please run the following commands on it with an elevated command prompt(RUNAS) and upload the fololowing files: ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt [from each DC/DNS Server] dcdiag /v /c /d /e /s:dcname >c:\dcdiag.txt repadmin /showrepl dc* /verbose /all /intersite >c:\repl.txt ["dc* is a place holder for the starting name of the DCs if they all begin the same (if more then one DC exists)] dnslint /ad /s "DCipaddress" (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321045) As the output will become large, DON'T post them into the thread, please use Windows Sky Drive (skydrive.live.com) [with open access!] and add the link from it here. Also the /e in dcdiag scans the complete forest, so better run it on COB.Best regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees , and confers no rights.

I can't disable RRAS because I need VPN connections. I think you can find the results of your commands here.

Hello, please upload the dnslint.htm as mentioned in the DNSLint output. With a single DC repadmin is not required but you also run the wrong command. How exactly is the machine connected to the internet, as your ipconfig /all contains only a single NIC setup? The dcdiag output contains DNS errors that MUST be solved: he host 334fd145-12cc-48fe-97e4-c3b4383ed892._msdcs.peltoset.local could not be resolved to an IP address. Check the DNS server, DHCP, server name, etc. So what about the question i posted earlier? "According to the the dcdiag error about DNS please make sure the DC/DNS server is registered in the forward/reverse lookup zone with it's A and Nameserver record. Additional make sure the DHCP client service is started and set to automatic on it, required for correct DNS registration."Best regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees , and confers no rights.

The server is connected to a ADSL modem. The problem isn't due to ADSL modem firewall or something. DHCP client is running. I think those records are correct, but the dnslint.htm says different. Hi, I would like to suggest you register A and SRV records to check the result. To register the ‘A’ Host Record in the issue the following commands in the Command Prompt (Start - Run - CMD). IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS IPCONFIG /REGISTERDNS To register the Domain Controller’s SRV Records and Replication GUID issue the following commands in the Command Prompt (Start - Run - CMD). NET STOP NETLOGON Rename the file %systemroot%\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\NETLOGON.DNS Rename the file %systemroot%\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\NETLOGON.DNB NET START NETLOGON Regards,Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question.
