Can't connect to upgraded Windows 2012 server with rdp

Hello,

I have just finished an in-place upgrade from a Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1 to Windows 2012 R2 Standard. The server is virtual with VMWARE. When i try to connect to the server with remote desktop, from my Workstation, the remote desktop simply shutdown the connection a few seconds after i enter my credentials for the server. I can just barely see that the server tries to start the '..remote session manager..' (or something like that) and then i'm disconnected.

I have double checked the requirements for running Windows Server 2012 R2 both in disk space and hardware speed, and the server should run 2012 just fine.

I am very curious what can cause a problem like this.

Hi

anything in the application event log on the client or the server?

Did you enable RDP on the server?

Client: The only events that are logged are the regular 'Audit Succes' when i use my credentials in the remote desktop connection

EDIT: I found this aswell on the client:

Log Name:      Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-RDPClient/Operational
Source:        Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-ClientActiveXCore
Date:          29-07-2015 10:43:43
Event ID:      1026
Task Category: Connection Sequence
Level:         Information
Keywords:
User:          CBIT-PC513\jjhs
Computer:      cbit-pc513
Description:
RDP ClientActiveX has been disconnected (Reason= 2)

Server: I cant access the server so i cant get to view the event viewer.

RDP was enabled on the earlier 2008 installation so i assume it still is, but i guess i cant be sure since i cant check it

That means that the disconnection has been initiated by the client:

disconnectReasonRemoteByUser 2 (0x2)

as per this article

Can you try from another workstation?

I have tried from other workstations including my administrators workstation, a colleague's workstation and through vmware. This also includes different Windows versions, 7 enterprise and 10 preview. Since my company is running a novell/zenworks environment i have also tried to connect with an administrative tool in the zenworks web gui, which sadly do not work either.

Can you turn off windows firewall and AV services and see if it helps?

You need collaboration from the server administrator, this issue cannot be troubleshoot without access to the server

I disabled our anti-virus and firewall protection but it didnt do any good

I am already collaborating with the system administrator, but he cant access it via. VMWARE 5.5 either. When we get to the lock-screen, the screen flashes when hitting ctrl-alt-delete (ctrl-alt-insert in VMWARE).

Im starting to worry it may not just be an rdp problem, which was the initial problem on my Workstation, but something in the server installation.

I would suggest you to disable NIC on VMware settings for this VM, do a force reboot, then, from VMware console logon to the server and check for RDP settings. This may help in fixing the issue.

This is obviously a server issue, try to restart in safe mode
July 29th, 2015 10:48am

This did not work as it didnt resolve the problem with the lock-screen. The connection to the server via vmware was established, but we can not get past the lockscreen.

I will try rebooting the server in safe mode.

I have now tried booting in safe mode and i am able to get past the lock-screen now, and proceed to enter my credentials for my account (with vmware console with server in safe mode). However upon entering i cant seem to find anything out of the usual that would prevent me from logging in without safe-mode enabled. Do you have any specific i should look for?

I happened to get an error once when trying to enter the server normally. It was a loginui.exe error (or something) but it dissappeared too fast to read it all. Could this be related to the error that wont let me get back the lock-screen?

I'd start from the event viewer of course

I have found out that it must be the failure of LogonUI.exe that is causing the trouble (I Googled my way to the conclusion since others had gotten the same error message in the event viewer). Why its working in safe-mode is beyond my imagination. I tried disabling services, both non- and Microsoft services, in the 'System Configuration' menu, but that didnt work either.

I will now try to re-install the OS on my server, since i have a feeling the mount was "dropped" before the installation finished proberly.

If anyone have anything else I could try, please let me know.

Can you run this command in safe mode and see if it works?

sfc /scannow

dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

Umesh, these commands did not work unfortunately.

the 'sfc /scannow' did not find any errors and 'dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth' said it restored something, but it didnt actually solve my issue

I recently discovered that several patches designed for Windows server 2008 were being pushed to the server with zenworks, and i have now removed those and will start a new installation on the server, to see if those patches were conflicting with the new OS.

" discovered that several patches designed for Windows server 2008 were being pushed to the server "

Should not make any difference.  The update process checks each update to see if it is applicable.  If it is not, it is not applied.  The only way it could be a problem is if you were bypassing Windows mechanism for installing patches and forcing 'fixes' by manually replacing files and registry settings.  That would be a problem for any version of the OS, though.
