Cached Credentials For Admin Share
Hi Everyone,
I've a server in a domain (srv-1) and a standalone server (srv-2). Both servers are running Windows 2008 R2. I've accessed the admin share h$ on the server srv-1 from server srv-2 several times. In the beginning username and password where asked while accessing
\\srv-1\h$.
But it is now cached in some way. When I make a connection with Windows Explorer to \\srv-1\h$ from server srv-2. I'm connected without being prompted for credentials.
Things I've already tried:
- looked into the key manager nothing there
- looked in Credential Manager but nothing there either
- used the command net use and it doesn't show anything
- executed net use * /d but without any success.
Can anyone help me out?
Thanks in advance.

Try logging off from the server and loggin on again... it will remember your credentials during the session.
Note: Logoff, not disconnect. With disconnect the user session will still be there and when you logon again it will take over the existing session.
Here I assume you logon by RDP, but are you? Or do you logon by console?

Are you using an account from srv-1 or a domain account which is defined in the same manner on srv-2 (same username and password)? Visit: anITKB.com, an IT Knowledge Base.

I'm logging on by console. This problem persists even after a reboot. Like said before I'm just typing \\srv-1\h$ in Windows Explorer. In the beginning I used administrator@domain to logon to the share.

I'm using the administrator account of the domain but the domain administrator is not added to any local group.

Only thing I can think of right now is to take a look at the following article:

Hi Jeff,
Thanks for your reponse. I've seen that article but control userpasswords2 doesn't seem to work in Windows 2008 R2. When I execute that command I get and Windows Explorer screen with empty search results.

If you are connecting using the administrator account, is the password on SVR-2 the same for the local admin? If so, that is why you are not getting prompted.Visit: anITKB.com, an IT Knowledge Base.

The domain administrator password is not the same but the local admin password could be let me try and I'll come back.

Hi JM,
Thanks for the great idea. The password for the local administrator on srv-1 was the same as the administrator password on srv-2. After changing the local admin password on srv-1 I get promted for the logon credentials.
Thank you all.
