CPU adds or upgrades - impact to Server OS installation?
When adding an additional CPU, or replacing an existing CPU with a faster CPU, does the Windows Server OS ever need reinstalling, or relicensing? or any service action? Or will the CPU be recognized automatically? Thanks, Rick

Rick, You should not need to do anything out of the ordinary for a similar CPU. For example, if you went from Intel 32 bit to Intel 32 bit. For adding another CPU, Windows should pick it up on a reboot and add the extra CPU. Re-licensing is not required as Windows licenses are issued per server, not per CPU. The only time I can ever see a re-installation required, is if you had a 64 bit version of Windows installed, and you had to replace the CPU with one which does not support 64 bit. Regards, Terry

hi there Terry is correct, re-installation of OS is not required, windows OS / any OS is coded in such a way that after installation of additional CPU windows updates its necessary registry for supporting. You should also check the CPU vendor's manual before considering an upgrade / new installation of CPU.there is no requirement for OS re-licensing / licensing. sainath Attending Microsoft Teched 2009
