CALs and User access
Hello,
We just bought a server for our small business runing Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition. We bought 5 CALs and to be honest I'm a bit in over my head here.We want the computers in this office on the same network as the server, to be able to log into the server and access programs and files. We also want to be able to have users access the server from anywhere using a username and password, now I know this has something to do with the Terminal Role, which I have enabled. But I really have no clue what to do, we just want to give 5 people CALs in a username type format and have them and the computers they are on be able to access files, and run programs remotely from anywhere. Please, any help would be greatly appreciated, we are really confused here.
This is our network set up in case it helps:
modem>linksys router>switcher
Thank You

If you want to restrict the user who are allow to connect your server, you can configure it using 2local security settings:
-"Access this computer from the network"
http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/en/library/f9c9ddb9-a7bf-4b1f-a0e3-376115c066bf1033.mspx?mfr=true
- "Allow logon through terminal services"
http://technet2.microsoft.com/WindowsServer/en/library/83c29372-c6c5-4550-86ab-ebdbf120f9fa1033.mspx
Remove "Everyone" and add in only the 5 users which you want to provide them access to your server.

Hi Matt-
Before we send you down the path around setting user permissions, I think your questions are a bit more related to what is a CAL and how does it work in terms of access methods. Your first stop should be the Licensing Glossary for the various definitions around Client Access License (CAL):
http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/resources/glossary.mspx
Since you are asking about how do CALs apply to WS03, take a look at this specific site dedicated to the topic:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/howtobuy/licensing/caloverview.mspx
You also mentioned something about Terminal Services, and we have a whole separate page describing how they work here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/howtobuy/licensing/ts2003.mspx
Take a look at these and let me know if you have any questions.
Cheers,Ian
