Burning through activation keys trying to resolve Windows Update bug
We use our TechNet subscription basically to test out hardware when we're looking to migrate our production servers. It's worked okay so far, but we're at the limit of our keys, and I'm not sure how to handle it. Here's the problem: The Windows Update for .Net doesn't work. Every combination we're tried on our production machines has either corrupted the installer database or just repeatedly prompts to install the same security updates again and again. So we're running a scripted install repeatedly to try to figure out some combination that will get .Net 4.0, 3.5, and 1.1 all running with the current security updates. Unfortunately, every time we do this we burn through another activation. (We've already burned through a couple keys on different hardware confirming it's not a hardware issue.) Does anyone know if reactivating on the same hardware counts towards the limit of 10 activations per key? Can we test this a virtual machine running on the same key as the host? In our case we only use Windows Server 2003 x64 Enterprise, since that's what our production machines run. I've already tried to escalate the problems with the security updates through that channel and got nowhere. Thanks, Mark

Hello, you should contact TechNet support about the specific license questions. And i don't talk about the forum here.Best regards Meinolf Weber MVP, MCP, MCTS Microsoft MVP - Directory Services My Blog: http://msmvps.com/blogs/mweber/ Disclaimer: This posting is provided AS IS with no warranties or guarantees and confers no rights.

if you are testing, why activate at all? the msdn/technet subscription benefits are usually retail product keys, although this does vary a bit depending on the product/edition/version. for server2003, it uses the much older anti-piracy mechanisms (it doesn't use MAK nor KMS for example). a) i wouldn't bother activating a test system, if it can be avoided. (this is actually MS advice for msdn/tn anyway) b) use a virtual if you like, but it makes no difference. virtual does not inherit any hardware signature from physical host c) use a fully volume licensed product/version/edition - it doesn't matter, since you hold an entitlement via msdn/tn. Have to activate to use Windows Update, which is what has the bug in the first place!

I think that you are under a misapprehension. Windows update does not require activation. I have a fully updated machine (latest update installed today) still showing 28 days to activate.Bill
