Building server for educational purpose
I'm looking to build a server that is capable of running Windows Server 2008 for the purpose of learning server technolgy, scripting, active directory, etc.As the server will not be supporting business-critical services, i'm assuming that i can just purchase a off-the-shelf desktop, correct? I'd want the desktop to support 64bit, and i guess video card/video ram is not important.Am I accurate in this? Am i missing anything?

Yes you can purchase any desktop PC with good RAM with 64BIT processor that should support Hyperv. Hyper-V requires an x64-based processor, hardware-assisted virtualization, and hardware data execution protection. http://blogs.technet.com/brad_rutkowski/archive/2008/01/26/does-my-cpu-support-hardware-virtualization-hyper-v.aspxhttp://www.intel.com/technology/virtualization/index.htmThanksSyed Khairuddin

Both the motherboard and the cpu need to support hardware assisted virtualization.A good tool for testing a computer for Hyper-V compatibilityis Steve Gibson'sSecurAble. My Hyper-V server has a Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H, with an AMD Phenom x4 9600 cpu. They cost about $200 last September. These days, you can get 8 GB of memory for less than $100, as low as $50 after rebates.
