Buffer overrun detected! spoolsv.exe
I have a brand new server with Server 2003 Standard (replacing an older box with Server 2003 Std). Set up from scratch, including all Windows updates. Copied data from old server (the hard way via external hard drive as intermediary). Started installing printers, all of which were working on the old server.
First I installed an HP2100 series with built in Jetdirect printserver, next an HP 1200 connected to an external Jetdirect, then a KM Bizhub 353 color printer/scanner/copier. In all cases, I used the same IP addresses as they had on the old server. In each case, I printed a test page from the server successfully. When I started the next printer, a KM Bizhub 600, I first noticed that there might be a problem, as the installation program could not find any printers, even when I provided the IP address. I cancelled the install and almost immediately got this error:
"Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Buffer overrun detected!
Program: C:\Windows\system32\spoolsv.exe
A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the program's internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must now be terminated."
At that point, the print spooler service is stopped, and whenever I start it, the error comes up again just as soon as any printer-related function is done--like opening the printers dialog box. I saw an April post with a similar problem which was not resolved. A helpful member suggested posting this as a new problem, so here we are.
Of course, I have put the old server back in place while I attempt to resolve this offsite (my home!) I can just start all over with a new WS2003 installation, but since I don't know what caused the problem, I fear it could recur.

Hi,
Thanks for the post.
From your description, I understand that the following error message is received when trying to install KM Bizhub 600 on Windows Server 2003 Standard
"Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Buffer overrun detected!
Program: C:\Windows\system32\spoolsv.exe
A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the program's internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must now be terminated."
This error might be caused by one of the following conditions:
There was invalid or incomplete data received by the print spooler
There is a bad printer device driver
To trouleshoot this issue, please perform the following step:
Step 1: Confirm the default Local Print Provider
=================================
1. Use Regedit to locate the Print key in the Registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print
2. Click to highlight the Print key in Regedit and export the key as a .reg file for backup purposes (File > Export).
3. Locate the Local Port Registry key:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Monitors\Local Port
4. Confirm that the Driver value in the Local Port Registry key is set to Localspl.dll. If it is not, double-click the Driver value to edit the Data String and set it to Localspl.dll.
Step 2: Please remove and reinstall the problematic printer again with the latest version of appropriate driver.
Does it work?
If this problem continues, we need to collect the following information:
Info1:
============
1. Export the following registry key and compress it
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print
2. Use Windows Live SkyDrive (http://www.skydrive.live.com/) to upload the file and then give me the download address.
Info2:
==========
Please collect the Setup&Performance version of MPSReport.
a. Download the MPS Report Tool from the following link:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b/1/bb139fcb-4aac-4fe5-a579-30b0bd915706/MPSRPT_SETUPPerf.EXE
b. After the download is complete, double-click this " MPSRPT_SETUPPerf.EXE" file. Then a CAB file will be generated called %COMPUTERNAME%_MPSReports.CAB. For example, if your computer name is "MyComputer", this CAB file will be named "MyComputer_MPSReports.CAB".
c. Open My Computer, browse to the "%systemroot%\MPSReports\Setup\Logs\CAB" folder. You can find the CAB file above and please send it to me.
Use Windows Live SkyDrive (http://www.skydrive.live.com/) to upload the file and then give me the download address.
Hope this helps.
