Billing for incoming/outgoing traffic for Azure SQL Database

Hi All,

We are planning to migrate an on-premise database to Azure SQL Database. Had one query as follows:

1. Do we get charged for the incoming/outgoing traffic to/from the Azure SQL Database?

2. On what parameters are the customers charged if they are using Azure SQL Database?

3. If we use an Azure VM and install SQL Server on the VM, will we be charged on the incoming/outgoing traffic?

Regards,

Saurabh

Hi Saurabh,

1. You are charged only for outgoing traffic that leaves the Azure Data Center [link], all incoming data is free of charge for bandwidth.

2. Azure SQL Database is charged by the hour dependent on the edition and service tier of the database [link]

3. You will be charged for only outgoing traffic outside of the Azure Data Center [link]

Hi Joseph,

Thanks a lot for the prompt reply. I had read it in the Microsoft documentation that for Azure SQL Database, the incoming and outgoing traffic is free. The exact statement is as follows:

"When using Azure SQL Database, you are not billed for individual queries running against Azure SQL Database or incoming/outgoing internet traffic." This statement is made in https://azure.microsoft.com/en-in/documentation/articles/data-management-azure-sql-database-and-sql-server-iaas/ (in the billing and licensing basics)

If the outgoing traffic is getting charged for SQL Database, then the above statement is wrong.

Can you please help me with this?

Regards,

Saurabh
