Best solution to remote access single DC with dynamic IP?
Hi,
I was just wondering what other people would use to remotely access a single DC and workstations on a site that has a dynamic IP?
This will be used to do some remote administration from time to time.
Thanks

Hello,
they can use the server / workstation DNS name to access the server /workstation remotely.
In this case, a DNS server will be contacted to solve DNS names.
You can try to use nslookup to check that.

Hey mr x,
Once again I have written a question and expected people to be mind readers.
The vital piece of information that I left out was that I want to access the network off site, remotely over the internet. They don't pay for a static ip from their isp so I was wondering the best way around this.
Thanks for the quick reply.

So, I have not understood what you wanted exactely.
How you want to access a network remotely without a knowledge of an IP address that is used to access it?
With dynamic addresses, I don't see a way to access this site. You have to get a static IP address and then you can use VPN tunnels.

I thought that people may use a service that allowed for connection through a 3rd party, like gotomypc, when dealing with small networks.
I might just suggest that a static ip be purchased to prevent any hassle.
thanks

Hello,
uswe services like Dyndns or other ones and configure your internet router to forward request to the internal network, either DC or client machines. That's the only option without using an ISP to buy your own one.Best regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees , and confers no rights.

Hey meinolf,
I'll look into using that.
Their isp provides them with a adsl router and I don't know what features it has. Hopefully it will support some sort of dynamic dns service that I can make use of.
I had spoken to someone who supports a few small business on the side and he was telling me about a 3rd party application he uses so that he can remote into the servers from his iphone but I couldn't remember what he said he used.
Thanks for your help

LogMeIn.com
Create a free account to remotely access your systems(Not IT Support), and install the agent on the server.
Then you can use Logmein.com or while logged into LogMeIn.com you can create shortcuts on a flash drive or on your laptop to get to that server that make it easier to get to a remote control console without logging into LogMeIn.com. Domain or system
credentials are still required at that point.
It's what I currently use for dynamic and static public IPs and it's been flawless ever since... it's pretty fool-proof remote management. There are alternatives but they aren't free... No ports to open or forward... Just make sure you allow outbound connections
for LogMeIn if they have a strict Egress Filter on their firewall.
LogMeIn.com has an app for Android and iPhone users called "LogMeIn Ignition" that allows remote access via Phone.... which is $30 per install(per mobile device) and is not restricted to "Which" account you use it to access. You can use alternating
accounts for LogMeIn Ignition but you'll have to sign out to get to them. I switch between login accounts at Logmein all the time.
Hope that helps!
