This will depend on the number of clients you have and the volume of printing that is occurring.
Having more than two thousand shares gets hard to manage. I've had up to 5000 on a clustered VM.
There are several factors to consider and thus not a white paper with hard numbers.
If you are looking for limiting factors, try to keep under 20,000 active print client connections. You will encounter resource constraints in services other than spooler that are using non-page pool memory.
