Best method of authentication for ISP
I'd like to get some opinions on the best method to securing internet access. I provide internet access to a couple of apartment buildings. Back in my office which is off-site I'm running server 2003. Right now I'm using Nomadix boxes locally
however I'd like to move away from that for various reasons (cost and centralization). The architecture is ethernet into the homes. I have a small headend with a 3845 router, a core switch and some distribution switches. There's only one
ethernet home run going into each unit. I looked at using switchport authorization via 802.1x however my issue is that most of the residents have SOHO routers (Linksys, D-Link, etc) installed that don't support 802.1x. I"m thinkin that PPPoE might
be the best option however I'm not sure is server 2003 supports it as well as Cisco. Doing some research now to find out however was hoping that someone could confirm this or if there's a better way to do this. Given that it's not a controlled
network like an office not all computers will be running XP, 2000 or even windows for that matter (MAC OS, etc). This is why I was leaning more to a UN/PW type of authentication. The Nomadix I use now uses the mac address of the computer or router
for authentication. I'm open to all suggestions. Thanks.
